Great Phone but a few bugs
Okay I love LG phones I have had the 7000 the 8300 the 8600 the enV the Venus and now the 8700. I like the phone but as i said above a few things I didn't like about it.
1.) The phone gets really hot on the bottom when talking not even alot, or just navigating throughout the menus!!!!!!!!
2.) The memory card slot is behind the battery, meaning you have to remove the battery to take the mem. card out.
3.) Poor battery life.
All in all a good phone but those few things really bugged me. Hope this helps.
Not a terrible phone.
I made the switch from the LG 8300, to the LG 9700. So far, I'm okay with it.
PROS;;
*GREAT Camera
*Nice menus (On the 8300, the traditional verizon one was ugly)
*Slim. Fits in my pocket well. (Which is great in school, by the way.)
*Speaker can only be used in a call. (Good for me because I'm a HUGE texter, and on the 8300, I'd constantly hit the speaker button)
CONS;;
*Fingerprints easily. (You have no idea how much this bothers me)
*In order for the camera's pictures to not be blurry, you must hold VERY still.
*Battery life. (This phone holds out from 5:45am to about, 4:00pm.)
*Front screen serves hardly any purpose. You dont know if you have a message you forgot to read or not unless you open the phone.
*Battery slot is incredibly hard to open. (Especially for me, a nail biter)
*Back gets very hot when in use.
Other than that, I think this is a good phone.
Just send it back...
I have had the VX 8700 for 4 months. It was an insurance replacement for the Verizon VX8600, which was discontinued. I HATE this phone.
Pros:
-It is very sleek and attractive
-Inside screen is good quality
Cons:
- Bad reception ( it once had pretty good reception but after a couple months it stopped and i have not dropped it or anything)
- Outer screen glows even when the phone is off ( which drains the battery)
- short battery life
-speaker phone is low
Maybe I received a lemon and its just my phone but I would not recommend this phone. I believe it to not be sturdy so it does not last long.
Great Phone!
I got this phone as a replacement for the VX-8700 and I am very happy with it. Number one is the material that it is made of. It is like aluminum billet -- very solid. That is important to me because I run a large warehouse and I just throw the phone in a pocket and it gets banged through my clothes all day when I am carrying things. I have had the phone for nine months with no problems except the battery wore out and the bluetooth has connectivity issues. Elsewhere on this site there are comments about how to correct this (it seems the software has been upgraded but you have to get verizon to give you a new phone for that.)
Not user friendly, exasperatingly inefficient.
My old phone was two years old. It had an antenna. It made phone calls, and sent texts. I switched to Verizon- but did not anticipate that America's favorite network had bad phones.
I wanted an efficient communication device thats ergonomic and effective.
The LG8700 was the only phone that functioned as a phone, and doesn't look like I'm playing a Gameboy.
Heres why this phone is awful-
LOOKS:
*Its pretty only if you don't actually touch it. Fingerprints leave it looking tarnished and dirty.
*You can't read the outside screen in daylight. It's a mirror.
*It has two "themes". The Business theme actually does look like a video game (fluorescent green?!) and the Metallic theme makes the phone function slower, eats battery , and is the color of the Terminator.
FEEL:
*When you hold it to your ear, your thumb naturally rests right on the camera button, while your index finger sets on the camera lens. I'm guessing this will eventually be bad.
*The buttons are difficult to use. I don't even gave long nails, yet every time I hit any of the keys on the left of the pad my texts read like "gpthq". The buttons aren't well defined. Its easy to slip.
FUNCTION:
* I am nearly insane after a week with this phone. I can't believe how inefficient this phone is.
To get to the screen where you type in a text- you have to hit 9 buttons. 9! My old phone? 2. When you type- there are no shortcuts. You cant hold the button down and have the cursor delete- you delete one character at a time. You cant hit the up or down button and jump lines, you have to space through each letter of each word. When you send the text- there is no audible confirmation that it sent. It completely defeats the point of sending a text! If I had pages left to complain- I could. That's how annoying this phone is.
People saying "I'll get used to it" are crazy. I want a user friendly phone. This isn't it. At least I can test drive the network for 30 days- I'm going back to Sprint.
lost in translation
this is a great phone,
nice slick and solid.
major linguistic bug,
in French mode, January is in Spanish,
so are some directive while messaging.
I guess they can send an upgrade for that.
I recommend this phone.
Buyer's Regret
Well, I thought I did my homework, but the truth about this phone is that the hype is just hype.
Pros: Very cool looking, brushed metal.
Outside display makes a great lipstick mirror.
Music player not easy to access, but you can program the arrow keys to make it easy to access.
Cons: The battery life, without making a single call is only 23 hours or less. They're sending me another battery, and Verizon isn't charging me. But I've only had the phone for 8 months.
The outside display just sucks. It shows the clock and battery life (which is not accurate, I go from 2 bars to dead in an hour), and that's it. I like to see who's calling by having their pic appear on the outside display, but you can't do that with this phone.
Everyone talks about the cool metal finish, but that also makes the phone heavy. Significantly heavier than other cell phones.
The speaker phone does suck. See other reviews for the details, everyone says it.
My bluetooth earpiece keeps falling out of signal for no reason. Verizon says there's nothing wrong. Whatever.
The camera sucks. It takes a picture about a second AFTER you click OK to take it. Most of my pics are blurry because I have the picture all set and by the time the camera records it, the subject is out of focus. And no flash. Why do so many "camera phones" have no flash? My old cheap samsung 300 series had a much better camera!
Keep researching, and pass this phone by. Unless you're looking for a phone with a nice lipstick mirror.
Not bad at all
I orginally had the 8600 and loved it but there was always something wrong with it. After my 5th phone in 8 months, they upgraded me to the 8700. Very nice. I like the feel of it. It has weight to it and doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart.
PROS:
Feels sturdy
Brushed metal hides some finger prints
Great camera
Feel of the keys makes texting faster
Ringers are loud and crisp
CONS:
I miss my outside display
Come with pouch instead of clip
They got rid of the # key to lock your phone
CLR and speaker buttons in odd places
Suprised at oversight
I upgraded to this phone a week ago from a Nokia 6256 and unfortunately it is going back as soon as I can figure out what to replace it with. (I hate the Verizon policy of only 1 exchange in 30 days)
Pros:
*Very sleek and stylish phone that has a nice feel to it.
*Sound quality and clarity have been good over the short time I have had the phone.
*Camera function is good - I like the gradual zoom feature.
*I like the quality and sound of the music player but wish there were external skip and back buttons.
Cons:
There are a number of features I miss from my Nokia - mainly texting seemed to be much easier on the Nokia and I also miss the Nokia inclusion of a customizable shortcut key from which you could access numerous features (not just the 4 on the navigation dial that LG provides)
But here is the big deal breaker for me. The "Clear" key is located directly above the "Send" key. Add to that the fact that there is poor keypad definition due to the flat panel design and it leads to disaster. I can't tell you how many messages I have sent in error as I was trying to backspace to correct text. I text way too much to live with that.
Outside of that feature I could live with the phone and probably enjoy it but with that feature its gotta go back.
