test drove at Sprint...

Nov 29, 2007 by danxmanly

Have been doing quite a bit of research on this phone and went by Sprint to try it out. Unfortunately the person there wasn't as informed on the phone as I was so I'm still doing my own self educating.

First of all.. it was dark when I did try the phone... How is the display in sunlight?

Secondly.. although the original touch had Wifi, this Sprint version does not. But that's not really required with the Sprint network, correct?

Third.. adding third party aps such as spb pocket plus, agenda fusion contact mgmt, etc... do all those work as they would in a PDA? My concern is with the built in touchflo screens already in the phone causing a conflict.

Fourth.. see where we can add a 4gig micro card, there are 8 gig cards available.. any reason why they wouldn't work?

Lastly... Music... does this thing display album art and how do you select your songs go play? Similar to Iphone?

I'm hoping to get this thing around Christmas if all goes well in my research. As much as this phone is being hyped on message boards and websites I have yet to see anyone walking around with one. Perhaps everyone has them in their pockets?! :-)

Buggy + Sprint customization = garbage

The touch interface on this phone would be great if not for the inability to change the applications that Sprint has locked into this phone. I am refering to the touch cube and the Sprint 'Today' plug-in. Neither of these can be customized without extensive hacking.

I've had the Touch for 3+ weeks now. I only run Exchange push email -- zero 3rd party apps, but have had numerous button lock-ups, frozen screens, and just generally buggy & weird behavior, like:

-hard/soft buttons don't respond
-start menu title changes to contacts
-bluetooth turns on by itself
-display changes to landscape by itself
-slow/sluggish menus at times

Again, I know its just a buggy phone because this stuff happens randomly and usually goes away with a soft reset.

The build is great and I love the size, but thats about it.

it's wonderful at times!! and then sucky at times!!

I honestly love this phone and all the stuff that it does but the two main things that bothers me about it is the battery life for one and the fact that sometimes it freezes up or some of the symbols might not work on the phone and the slow response time when you touch the screen. but other than that i love this phone i would not even think about getting a different one until the new version of this comes out! maybe it's because i work for sprint. but i really like this phone when customers come in i tell them to at least try it out! oh another negative is that you can download ring tones from like grits and eggs but you can not directly download ring tones from sprint.com and the TV buffers a lot sometimes but the music is so loud that i did not need to but the speakers! i think everyone should get this phone especially if you like learning new things everyday!

Not yet there

First of all, I was very existed about this new phone - visited a store and played a bit with the unit:

(+)
1) looks nice
2) the phone has the right form factor for a smart phone
3) touch screen capability

(-)
1) the touch screen is not sensitive enough (the right touch sensitivity screen can be found on Palm Centro)
2) the phone virtual keypad buttons are two small - a lot of wasted space on the screen in this mode - it is hard to dial a phone number - basically this design flaw kills the phone;
3) the virtual keyboard is not the right kind - a full virtual keyboard is required for this type of phone;
4) no Wi-Fi, why to drop the feature - truly believe it was requested to be dropped.

I stopped my phone evaluation after I checked the basic features - the phone did not meet my simple requirements. The good thing is that 2 and 3 can be fixed and 1 and 4 are not. I believe if HTC can address all this issues with the next model (if they read our posts) we'll have a phone everyone wants. I'm not an I phn fan, but HTC did not even spook the Apple with this unit. Again, very excited about future HTC smart phones, wishing you best HTC.

Ed
