Motorola V180 / V186 / V188
Average Ratings
Decidedly sub-par when new and died quickly
I have TWO of these phones, so I am not talking about an isolated incident. When the phones were new, they were much worse in terms of reception and holding calls than ANY of my previous phones, and I have had many. At a little over one year old, one of them has so much static interference it cannot be used. The other is really problematic and well on its way to being worthless. These are terrible phones, which is why you can get them free or very cheaply after rebates. It is not worth it, especially if you sign a contract and cannot upgrade for a period of time longer than a year. Be warned.
Its Just Ok
I have owned the V-188 for one year now. It is on the T-Mobile network that has a full signal in my home area. I find the display to be to small, Also the ringer is way to low and the ear piece is also very low. I recommend LG. I never had a bad one.
Poor Quality
The V180 is without a doubt the worst phone I have ever owned. The display malfunctions to the point that you can not read it. The phone cuts off in the middle of a conversation. The phone locks up for no reason and the reception is the worst I have ever encountered.
Not Good
I've had this phone for about a year now and after the first month I was disappointed because I had no way of knowing what time someone left a voice message if the phone was off. Then another month into it, incoming or outgoing calls would have interference with something to which my voice would echo or sound electronic, that even happens when I check voice mail and I know it wasn't the voice mail because I would go back in and check the same one again and hear it clearly. I live in colorado and travel from denver, north 30 min or south 30 and into the mountains. The phone takes a long time to turn on and long to get reception..once I have it..it isn't too bad except for in a movie theater. I have read all the reviews and agree that this phone is a bad investment, I am going to switch to another.
Moto v180 ROCKS!!!
I've had my v180 since January '05 and it still works great...I don't see why so many other people are having so many problems.
If you don't get very good service, check where you are. It may be and probably is your company.
Definitely a + from me.
Worst Phone I've Ever Had
I got 2 of the V180s free by signing a two year contract (had two phone lines). About 45 days after they were activated, one of them got where the person you were talking to could only hear static. I returned the phone and it was replaced. The other phone from the original order began to have the same symptoms after approximately three months of use. I returned it and the company replaced it with a refurbished phone. The screen on the refurbished phone had a faded-out look to it but the phone worked okay. Motorola charged me $75.00 to replace the second phone saying that their inspection proved that I had damaged the phone.
I am located near the NC/SC state line. In areas that I have always had good reception in with cingular wireless, I have poor reception and sound quality with this phone. My signal can be showing full strength and the person I am talking to can't hear me good or it sounds like I am in a drum.
Note that I have only had two other phones since 1995. Nokias that were free with contract.
The only good thing that I have to say about this phone is that if you get one it will definitely cut down on your cellular phone usage.
crappy phne
I don't like this phone Ive had it for just over a year now, and I'm getting a nokia this week. This phone is so useless. here are some pros and cons.
pros
it sometimes works. sometimes.
long battery life.
it has aim.
cons.
the screen is hard to see because so much lint gets under it.
you can't read the screen outside.
service sucks.
this phone has a cheap plastic covering and it looks cheap.
finally i feel embarrassed to own this phone. I think they discontinued it in my area it sucks so much. anyway you shouldn't buy this phone if you want a good phone, it doesn't even have any good games.
FREE IS STILL TOO MUCH!!!!
My husband & I got our phones in March of 2005. By May, we had a lot of problems with dropped calls. They sent us a replacement which was not any better. The phone lasted a couple of months & that was it. I will have a signal however the phone will not ring & not show any missed calls - hours later it will finally beep with voice mail.
Nothing is more irritating than having a cell phone in a time of need & it not work.
I would not recommend anyone BUYING this phone!!
Decent Phone, Terrible Connection Problems
This phone has a nice shape to it, and a decent menu system. The ringer is nice sounding, even at very loud volumes.
However, I can not stand using it because its gets a hellish amount of static and drops calls all over the place. The base line reception is the worst I've ever seen with any of the half dozen or so phones I've had at my house. But even with full bars, the call quality is terrible.
Stay away from this phone if you value your sanity.
DO NOT GET THIS PHONE!!
I'll only give it a ".5" rating because it looks good. That's the extent of the positives for me. The most important thing in a phone for me is for it to actually work and keep working for a reasonable period of time!
I've been through 4 of these within 1 yr. The first 3 just up and died with no warning. Worked fine one minute the next it was dead. When I called for a replacement I was charged $50 each time. The last replacement I got in Nov. '05. It is now Jan. '06 and I had to call today to get another phone. The day I opened it there was a blank line running through the front of the case. I could still sorta see the time, caller ID, etc but it looks horrible. I didnt bother calling about it though until today when, yet again, it up and died. They did get it to come back on through a reboot but told me that the blank line alone indicated there was something more than cosmetic wrong with it. Im now going to try the Motorola v551 and hope to God it's better than this one. One good thing is they're not going to charge me the $50 replacement fee but only after I complained so much about what I've been through and rightly so.
Save yourself the trouble and aggravation and possibly money of replacing this phone by not even TRYING it out!
