Delightful Little Guy

Jan 12, 2008 by mc-fine

Jumped from a PPC 6700 to the HTC Touch (6900) and I am glad I did. Half the thickness, half the weight, double the memory, improved Bluetooth stack and WM6 with an improved interface. The decision was a no brainer except for the huge detail of no hard qwerty keyboard. This problem is solved with the Spb Fullscreen Keyboard. This is a must have app for the Touch as far as I am concerned. I can type even faster than my 6700. The 12 and 20 key Touch keyboards work quite well with xt9 if you are into that.

The issue reported saying that the devices were going to sleep and needed to be reset happened once to my wife’s phone but never to me so far after 4 days. We both have 3rd party programs installed.

Hardware volume button is not sluggish like on the 6700 and camera loads up much faster. Camera is a 2MP no flash cell phone camera. If you are expecting Canon SLR quality slap yourself for me.

Conclusion: Addresses all the issues I had with my 6700 with a more intuitive interface and sleeker/lighter body. Thumbs up.

Nice-
+ Slim and light great looking phone with nice silver and black finishes.
+ Fast processor, extra ram and microSD slot for 4+ GB of storage.
+ Great new interface and nice animated Touch cube.
+ 12 and 20 Key pads perform well with xt9
+ Brighter more visible screen in sunlight
+ Very good call quality
+ Good speaker

Meh-
- Touch screen is slightly more sensitive than your normal device screen. Sometimes have trouble with tiny icons grouped together. Still need your stylus.
- Touch scrolling is sluggish on IE
- Touch Keyboard has larger full qwerty keyboard but is only accessible during txt/email search and password entry. Should be a permanent entry option.
-Auto complete when entering message recipients only works with Touch keyboard and keypad.

This is a great phone.

I have never owned a traditional PDA, and i must admit after reading some reviews here, very nervous about ordering the touch. Now that I have had it here in my hands for a week, I can honestly say I'm extremely happy with the phone.
Very easy to use/learn and overall a nice phone. The texting could use some work,(Small keyboards) but after a download or so perfect. No other problems. Plenty of memory, apps. run smooth and quick. So many options its pleasing/ never felt over whelmed. Small and lite, easily fits in a pocket (or supplied case) comfortably. Do not miss out on this phone highly recommended.

Great phone, one of the best PDA's out there

Dec 25, 2007 by klmsu19

First off this is one of the best PDA phones available in the US currently. The only thing that would touch it is the ATT Tilt in specs.

I find reading a lot of reviews here a lot of ignorance going around by obviously new to PDA people.

Ive been using WM for over 3 years now and been through more than 10 WM phones myself.

1. Resets are NORMAL, this is a mini-computer, you reset your home computer right? well this is Windows still.....

2. There are SOME people who have legit issues but sounds like a LOT of excuses going around.

One review said con- no wifi. Umm did you even read the specs before you dropped the money? it would have been apparent its not there.

Another review- push is a hassle? sorry but i don't buy that. Took me 5 min tops to set up. 3min at mail2web.com got a free exhange account, 2 min to pop in the settings into activesync and good to go.

Another review who works in emergency field- if 100% contacts is needed invest in a $10 pager, a WM phone wont be 100% reliable 100% of the time. its the nature of the beast for the power you get out of it.

Other than that MOST of the gripes are USER ERROR not phone error. IE explorer locks up? prob your fault honestly. These phones freeze VERY rarely randomly, most of it is YOU as the user opening too many programs at once or have too many running not checking your RAM available and experiencing lockups

I'm a seasoned WM user and since the day it came out ive MAYBE had it lock up 4 times, 3 clearly my fault being impatient trying to do 5 things at once, ONCE it did lock up on its own. Ive had no problems at all generally with missed called or lockups so i suggest educating yourself in Windows Mobile before spending such a great amount on a device to show off or whatever the reason may be.

99% of the issues here are USER ERROR NOT PHONE ERROR so stop rating the phone a 1 because you don't know what you're doing, you're doing everyone a disservice by misrepresenting a good product.

HTC Touch is worth it, if you know what you're getting into

The reviews here are helpful, thanks everyone. I have a few additional points. First and foremost, the phone has been great. I've had it for about 48 hours now and have been impressed with the software, battery life, form factor, and weight.

The issues I've encountered so far are minor. The USB charger and interface requires an adapter (supplied) which was okay. The speaker isn't great, and there seems to be this issue where if the phone is on standby for a long time (more than 1.5 hours) it won't come out of sleep mode. This may be an issue with my firmware, I'm taking it to the sprint store tomorrow to check. Lastly, I don't like how you have to take the back cover off to access the micro SD slot. All these things don't add up to much, but still (I do wish it had built in wireless).

To address other peoples complaints, the keyboard does take some getting used to. It is QWERTY, but it's virtual. To those of you who think the touch DUAL is the solution, you should know that the keyboard on that is T9 - not QWERTY, so don't bother waiting - this phone gets easy to use and I can use one hand to do my typing.

I also like that it comes with a screen protector - I put this on first thing and it helps. The use of the touch screen is not inhibited with this protector on.

WM6 works great, and while the HTC software keeps running the background, its easy to change the setting so that closing them (with the "x") makes them stop running in the background.

Summary:
If you're looking for a sleek, light and non-professional pocket PC phone, this is it. If you're looking for something big, bulky and the full-on mobile PC, get the HTC Mogul from sprint.

Flawless...almost!

Well,to say that the Sprint Touch is awesome would be an understatement!It is simply fantastic at almost everything it does.It is really good at being a "phone"!People tend to always forget about that important feature.But it is crisp and clear.The form factor is simply amazing!I mean..it's all screen!lol.The responsiveness of the touch screen is excellent!Once you get used to the sensitivity.But once you get it down,it is a breeze to use.Which leads me to the TouchFlo launcher.It is really well done.And more responsive than you would think.At first I wanted to mash down on it!But after alittle time with it,I realized that you only have to barely swipe the screen to either launch or flip the"cube"over.Very cool app with some nice animations.All of the menus got a face lift for the most part.There's larger start menu and the today screen are worlds better than the standard WM6 interface.Much more user friendly.Navigation as a whole is 100% better!And the flick scrolling in the different menus is really helpful for fast searching.And the letter column in the contacts is really cool.You just run your finger upon and down to select different letters,while the contact list auto searches.Very cool!It also has all your standard WM6 productivity tools.The Java app is very cool.I downloaded operamini and it works without any settings to adjust.But,this leads me to one of my only gripes.The PIE browser is lacking.It is extremely laggy!I fixed this by downloading the Opera mobile browser.Which is 100% better.And the HTC KB is good but I personally like the Touchpal KB much better.But other than that.This is the best device that I've ever owned!I would have given it a five,but the fact that PIE was unimpressive really bummed me out.But the Opera browser owns it in a bad way!So overall it is my favorite device to date.I highly recommend it to anyone looking for new mobile device that not only does everything and more!While looking completely awesome!

The Touch Deserves Some Credit

Alright, between the touch and the iphone, it's the iphone for me. I work for at&t and I must admit the touch is almost nect to nect with the iphone in almost every aspect.

Rate plan ( cost );
Iphone will cost you at least $60 that is, voice and data. Touch, well what I'm paying is about $40, now which side you're on...lol...not to mention the device retail price.

Interface;
I gotta give it to the touch. There is so much much you can do with the touch interface.

Music, Camera and Video;
Point goes to iphone even though i careless about these features.

Data entry ( texting );
Iphone but there is new keyboard called the zoomboard, I downloaded this on my touch and man it's great. I will say that it's better than the iphone keyboard.

Map, directions;
Iphone again, I like the pinch thing on the iphone. The touch is not that bad either.

Call quality, speaker;
Touch wins, ever since I had this phone I've not experience any drop calls and the call reception is very good too.

Browser;
The touch don't stand a chance, iphone all the way.

Design;
Hands down the touch just kills the iphone on that one.

Ok knowing what I know now, I'll recommend anyone to get the touch. Good call quality call, evdo not bad neither, the internet is pretty fast if you ask me. One of the nice things about the touch is the third part apps. You can do almost anything with those apps. on your phone, which I think the iphone is lacking big time. And to be honest with you guys, my touch never crash on me, no miss calls as most of you were having problem with.

Great Phone!!!

Dec 1, 2007 by PhnFrk

I have to say this phone is the best by far that I have ever had. It is my first smart phone and I love it. Alot of people have mixed reviews about this phone. I am not sure if there might have been a bad batch of phones but I have not had any of the issues some people are talking about. Resets, phone locking up, battery. I have had my phone over a month. 15 mins of playing with the phone at a store doesn't give it any justice!

The keyboard is very easy to get use to. I have very big fingers and I can type just as fast on a regular phone. You just have to get use to it!

Programs run very easy on the phone. Also I have downloaded some other plug ins and have not seen a real problems with them working with Windows Mobile.

It is also very light weight not bulky and long like the Iphone. Overall just a great phone!

I do wish that the camera had a flash, and that it did also have WiFi.

I gave it a four because there is no such thing as a perfect phone!!

It might not be a Rolls Royce, but it sure is a Bugatti

Everybody knows that there is nothing that can compare to the iPhone, but the Touch is not far off. In all honesty, the only things that the iPhone has that the Touch doesn't is: 1) Safari... to be more specific, THE PINCH TO ZOOM...THAT'S ALL. You can do all of the same things on the Touch that you can do on the iPhone (page zoom in/out, click and save pics off the web, etc.) and btw, don't forget that the Touch is the only smartphone with the "touchFLO" cube.

2) Wi-fi, the iPhone actually works BETTER on wi-fi, the 3G network SUCKS, my friend has one and we did a comparison, my Touch EVDO is AS FAST, IF NOT FASTER THAN THE WI-FI CONNECTION on the iPhone. To top it off, if your outside of yout coverage area, YOU STILL CAN'T USE IT.

3)Keyboard: Yeah it's a real touch qwerty, but my touch sure type qwerty paired with T9X delivers awesome performance!

The touch has better functionality, it's SOO customizable, you really can do anything to it. Don't like the keyboard, FINE! Download and install the iPhone's keyboard, SELL OUT! lol! The home screen is better and easier to use. The Camera, don't get me started! Better zoom capabilities and features.... I have sprint TV and INSURANCE and YOU CAN EXPAND THE MEMORY TO 4 GIGS! Yeah, the iPhone has 8, but I know if don't wanna hear the same lame songs I did last week, I can just pop in another card (with different music) and be on my way, instead of having to sit there for 20 minutes deleting and syncing new songs..... It's smaller, lighter and an all around BETTER phone, I LOVE IT!!!!!

Sprint's Premier Smartphone

The HTC Touch is a powerful, WM6 Pro phone. Coming from the Treo 700wx and Mogul, this is the best of the lot from Sprint Windows Mobile Professional phones.

Pros:
TouchFlo
Size and Style
Great Grip and Feel
Very Nice Screen
Decent Speakers
Great Call Quality
Windows Mobile 6

Cons:
Standard Windows Mobile Professional flaws (lock-ups, soft-resets, etc.)
No Voice Dial
TouchFlo

Neutral, but what others complained about:
Lack of WiFi
Lack of MMS
Touch Keyboard

The TouchFlo technology is pretty damn responsive for what I initially thought it would be in a Windows Mobile Device. Now, it’s no iPhone (I have an iPod Touch, so I know how awesome Apple’s Touch tech is), but it’s very, very good.

The Touch has a very slick design. The phone feels great in hand, has a nice, vibrant screen, and is the right size. The camera on it is also pretty decent (though I think the BB Pearl has the best camera out of Sprint’s current lineup).

The major benefit of the Touch is that it’s Windows Mobile 6 Professional. WM is the most advanced mobile OS (when compared to its major competitor…Palm). The customization capabilities of the OS just make it my preferred choice. It seems that most people who complain about the device (lack of MMS, all-touch keyboard, etc.) are just ignorant on Windows Mobile and should look at the simpler Palm devices. I suggest if you get this phone, you should be ready to get online and look for downloads to get the most out of it. TouchPal keyboard download was probably the best download I could find for the phone, along with the ArcSoft MMS hack.
The only other major con I noticed is the lack of voice dial. If you want Voice command, I suggest downloading Microsoft Voice Command for $30.

This phone is a step in the right direction for Sprint, but there is still a lot to improve upon (memory, reliability, official MMS support, etc.) for their next generation of Smartphones.

iPhone killer for sure

Nov 10, 2007 by djnik26

I just purchased this phone yesterday from my work (I'm an indirect Sprint rep). I absolutely love this phone. I bought the Mogul the day it came out and I had the Moto Q before that. My biggest reservation I had when buying the Touch was the lack of a hardware keyboard. This proved to only be a problem in one situation, which is that my threaded sms program from my Mogul doesn't work well since the on-screen keyboard covers what you are typing. It's funny because this is exactly the phone I have been looking for. I loved everything about my Mogul except for the fact that it could be a little laggy sometimes (due to the smaller amount of RAM) and that it had a sliding keyboard. I'm not a fan of moving parts on a phone because it seems like no matter what they always come loose. The on screen keyboard on the Touch is extremely easy to get used to, and I already feel like I can type faster than I did on my Mogul. It was also a seamless transfer for me between the two because I already had a lot of the Touch plugins on my Mogul.

PROS:

- 105 MB of program memory (RAM)
- TouchFLO interface is cool
- 2.0 MP Camera
- Large, vibrant, and accurate touchscreen

CONS:

- I haven't really found any at the time of writing this.

I would recommend this phone. It has a very nice form factor and fits extremely well in the pocket.
