Excellent Choice
This phone is a rock solid performer ! I must say Sprint has come along way in providing quality customer service. Along with that comes this Sanyo MM7400 phone. The audio quality is excellent. The screen is bright and clear. The voice activated phone has never failed me. There is nothing to program with that feature. It picks up by the way you typed in the contact name. Camera and video are clear for a phone. Nice choice of ringers. Push to talk included as well. Has full multimedia functions with TV ! Replaceable covers. Box comes with two ! I switched from Verizon Wireless (numerous billing problems) to Sprint PCS and I'm not disappointed at all !
Cool, but expensive
First off, this is a cool phone. It looks sleek, it is rugged (I dropped it and it didn't get a scratch thanks to the rubber grip), and it has most of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a new cell phone. The speaker phone is the greatest feature I have ever had in a cell phone. It gets distorted sound when the volume is up high, but if you have the phone within 6 feet there is no need to have it up loud because the volume is impressive even in the middle range.
The reception is MONSTER. If you have been using a Samsung or LG phone you are going to be impressed with the reception you can get with this thing. I get two bars in the Subway (that is unheard of for a Sprint phone).
The camera is average. I don't expect much from a cell phone camera, and it is a good thing because it is about like every other cell phone camera I have ever seen.
The biggest gripes I have are:
1) The Sanyo features are not user friendly.
2) The multimedia feature is prohibitivly expensive.
3) $349 before rebate is a slap in the face.
4) Finding accessories is like pulling teeth (they are around, but everyone has been sold out of them for months).
Great phone, but half-duplex speakerphone!
Just got the mm7400 friday evening. So far so good.
Major downside (coming from a samsung n400) is the half-duplex speakerphone! :( The n400's didn't sound the best but at least you could carry on a conversation without cutting off the other person all the time.
Other reviews indicate the speakerphone is greatly improved from other Sanyos....
Good signal, FAST Vision access, useless MM stuff for me..news, a limited selection of sports, and old cartoons. Oh, and a bit of Discovery content, covers the free stuff.
Ringer on this phone is NOT loud with most aftermarket ringtones, nor even with the included ringtones.
Buttons are really flat which takes some getting used to...but they are backlit.
Over all a good phone so far, just pointing out the quirks above. ;)
Still a Sanyo phone....
This is a nice phone. Good sound quality, great reception, and very fast internet access.
My problem with this phone, as all of the Sanyo phones, is that it is NOT very user friendly when compared to a Samsung or my personal favorite right now, the Toshiba VM 4050. My biggest complaint in the operating system of the Sanyo phones is that they only offer 8 speed dial numbers, while the Toshiba will offer 98 and the Samsung will offer even more. Also, the camera isn't very impressive with the 7400.
Again, the speed of the phone is great, but not worth switching back to a Sanyo. I am taking this phone back to the store, and sticking with my Toshiba. If you have always used a Sanyo, and used to the limits of the operating system, you will probably love this phone.
Not quite perfect
My contract allowed me to upgrade now (at the best rate) and I couldn't wait till March for the 5600. This phone works very well and has great features, but lacks a few that I want. The basics are excellent: reception, sound, ringers etc. I like the camera but wish it had a zoom, no biggie. Camcorder works fine and it's all I need. Speed of Vision is excellent and the streaming video is very cool. The other big thing missing is Blue Tooth, as everyone mentions, but I was told an attatchment may be in the works that isn't too big and would be fine for my needs. To wrap up.. Pros: Great working phone, excellent ringtones, excellent speakerphone, and many features. Cons: no camera zoom, not Tooth..This phone will hold me until the next generation after the 5600. We need real time video-conference wireless phones. I predict 2-3 years.
One Hot Phone
I originally bought the MM-7400 for its multi-media capabilities, namely streaming video and a web browser that displays more than mere text websites. Having been a longtime fan of non-flip Nokia phones, I was searching for something completely new. This phone is so awesome I don't know where to begin. The ready link (walkie-talkie)works perfectly. If you plan on using the link feature, however, opt for the extended battery. The browser needs more memory for byte heavy pages, but still works well for a phone that views actual web pages. The camcorder works great, as advertised, as does the camera (love the zoom and night mode features). The streaming video is the real star. If reception is good and the servers aren't too busy (read: business hours), the video is clear and continuous. Otherwise, it gets slightly choppy, but not bad enough to be concerned about. The reception is pretty good around Newark, NJ (usually 3 bars+).
Add bluetooth and a media player compatible with Windows Media, Real, and Quicktime and the phone would be beyond improvement. Sprint does need to expand its streaming media options beyond news, sports and weather streams. Especially since the plans can run beyond $100 per month with media plans included.
Great solution with a few side effects
I have been using this Sanyo for a few weeks now, this is not the first Sanyo that I have owned, in fact its the seventh. This phone is awesome, the display is great, large with a high resolution, the phone is well constructed, and is the first sanyo flip that I have owned that did not need the Extended life battery which I had already purchased. The speakerphone is great, just as good as any other sanyo. The reception and audio quality of this phone are both outstanding, there is no "sweet spot" on the earpiece. There are only a few things I do not like about this phone, and I expect most of these problems to be corrected in time. I have yet to find sync software that operates correctly, there is a lack of cases and holsters, and I would like to see a nextel style holster for this phone, that holds the phone backwards, allowing room for the extended battery, and protecting the front of the phone. If this phone had an expasion slot, MP3 capability, and an infared port, it would be in my opinion, the perfect phone.
FIRST SANYO PHONE OWNED
Pros: The phone mm-7400 Sanyo is more than I expected from a cell phone. It is a much better phone than my previous cell phone. The phone has every thing that I will ever use on a cell phone.
Cons: Have not found any cons other than it could maybe have Blue Tooth. But I can live without it.
Over all the Sanyo mm-7400 is a great phone for the money.
Great phone...but forget the plastic holster
The phone is fantastic, and I won't repeat what everyone else has said.
Unfortunately, I purchased the plastic holster form Sprint's accessory hotline (none in the store). It is absolutely useless. Very difficult to get the phone locked into the holster, and once you do it's very easy to bump the latch and have it fall out. Mine hit the pavement two times in two days, so it's going back. Hopefully the Body Glove case will work better.
Another winner from Sanyo
Wow! Believe the hype because this phone is a great one. This is my fourth Sprint phone and definately the best one yet. It excels in so many areas.
Two of the most important criteria I demand of a phone are reception and sound quality. I returned an 8200 because it was inferior to the 8100 in both these areas. Fear not, the reception exceeded my expectations for this phone. The 7400 holds calls in places that the 8100 regularly dropped. The quality of the sound from both speakers is excellent - the speakerphone is actually usable. The microphone sound quality is also an improvement over the 8100.
Other Pros:
High quality ringers sound unbelievable.
Vision speed is FAST.
Voice dialing works without programming.
Superb build quality- should be very durable.
Screen resolution is excellent.
Faceplate changing system is ingenuous.
Cons:
Size-it's quite large (due to large screen)
Pictures are ok (as expected @ 640x480)
To sum it up - the 8100 was a good phone but getting a bit "long in the tooth." I got the 7400 thinking it would hold me over until the 5600 comes out. It's good enough that I may just end up keeping it for more than a few months.
