Unabashed review of the v710

Aug 3, 2004 by hkopolov

Having owned this phone for nearly a week, I have had ample oppurtunity to both like and dislike this phone.
While this may be one of the most highly touted and feature packed phones around, it simply does not live up to Motorola's its worth the wait slogan. The phone has a good weight to it, but it has a shiny plastic composition to it, which gets very grimy and very greasy really quickly. The phone is uncanny in its ability to pick up low signals in a variety of a locations, but unless the ear-piece is almost in your ear, you will not hear the person on the other end of the line.
With the preliminaries out of the way here is my summary:

Pros:
Nice size
Good weight
Two screens
Nice white back-light
Loud ringer
Flash (disputable)
Large buttons on keypad
Speaker-phone
Voice activated dialing, with no training required
Expandable memory
Bluetooth (highly crippled)
Ability to customize wallpaper

Cons:
Low earpice volume
Large handset also gets heavy to hold if on a long conversation
Horrible camera. Motorola really screwed up or blatantly lied about having a 1.3MP camera
Video is a real joke
Menu layout is entirely crappy, and lacking any type of intelligence
The crippling of bluetooth really prevents anything useful from being done with the phone

Overall in my mind, the cons out weight the pro's and I will be returning the phone for a Samsung phone. I might be slightly partial to the Samsung line of phones, being how they have better screen, better menu layouts and a much better camera. If these sentiments echo with you, then stay away from the 710.

Moto n' Verizon need to divorce!!

I think the relationship between these two should have ended after the StarTac's went out of commission. From antenna problems (V120), to battery life (T720/730), the latest "argument" in the form of the V710 might as well be the last straw. It's been so easy for Motorola to find success with Nextel, Cingular, and AT&T... bringing 'small and affordable-yet limitless capable' phones that are very well constructed. But the V710, after the broken ice of hype and anticipation, is sinking anyone's trust with this couple. I personally could not wait when we got it before anyone in my Radio shack store, but after 10 minutes, it just became another phone. Here's what I was impressed with:

The resolution of the inner screen: This baby was clear as daylight! Backgrounds are beautifully rendered and really draw your attention every time you flip open this 'brick'.

The buttons: Oddly enough, I found the buttons to be constructed decently, spaced-out nice and easy to press.

Transflash: For MP3 playing. Nice!

Signal Strength: Surprisingly also, the phone had really good reception with all the other features built into this phone.

Ok.. now it's time to vent... here we go:

Overall Construction: Terrible! The screen (being the largest and most clear of any Verizon phone) was very heavy and worries me that it will destroy the phone everytime you close the phone. The design's worse then a un-coached football team; nothing seems to flow together correctly.

Aqua-tooth: It's not quite Blue, thanks to Verizon. I mean who has the right to modify a phone robbing the consumers of all the possibilites of TRUE Bluetooth.

External Display: USELESS! The resolution, brightness, and contrast of the outer screen is horrible, making it very hard to read anything, including the current time. Not being able to change the background on the display either is not what I'd like to call "feature-full".

Not to mention: Terrible camera, low battery life.

No doubt: Life's Good with LG!

Don't Buy This Phone If Your A Moron

I received this phone a week ago and I love it.

Pros.
1. Speaker phone has great sound both ways.
2. Voice command is the Best yet.
3. Picture quality is Great.
4. Video quality is Great.
5. Memory card.
6. Blue Tooth.
7. Doesn't heat up like other phones.
8. Easy to use.

Cons.
1. In places with bad lighting pictures aren't the best. Most people don't like this, its not that hard to turn on a light is it.
2. Blue tooth should be move useful, we'll see what happens.

Most of the reviews I have read bash this phone I would have to guess that the people don't have one or are just to stupid to figure it out.

Its great

The phone has been an icon, just like I thought it would be. MP3 sounds great, bluetooth is on hit and picture quality beats out my 6000, so in my rating this phone is perfecto. Don't hate it because it's beautiful.

Excellent Product

Finally a Verizon Bluetooth phone with just about every feature I've ever wanted. Does anyone have information about using Apple's iSync with the product? I can't seem to get iSync (either via Bluetooth or USB) to see the phone. Any comments would be appreciated!

"v710 Moto is a winner"

Sep 9, 2004 by KEVIN1270

Pros:
-excellent reception, this phone seems to pull in service where previously I was unable to reliably connect (T MOBILE).

-Crystal clear handset, many of the people

-Loud, Clear Speaker phone, -Bluetooth.

-Looks, simply the best looking VZW phone out there.

-Ringtone Volume, nice and loud, as well as crisp and clear.

-Keypad, Well placed, crisp buttons.
-ObeyMoto Voice commands, Simply one of the coolest features of this phone. No training necessary at all and is accurate 99.8 of the time uses voice recognition software will learn your voice (HOW COOL) You can call up most commands (Camera, Name dial, Number Dial recent calls, voice mail )

Cons: no speaker phone when shut (that's dumb)

if you talk alot you will need extended battery.

The camera sucks no doubt about it, my daughter his a moto v300 camera is 5 times better on a lower grade phone ? But remember it's a phone not a camera.

out side display sucks very weak could have done a better job with that

Over all the phone is a winner

nice toy, but tooo many flawsssss

I was searching for a cell phone for months before i found the v710. My previous cell (from years back) was a motorola timeport, which other than the flashy clam shell casing, wasn't all that great. I really thought motorola got it right this time.

pros:
Great display, menu easy to use,
camera, video, voice record, mp3
charges fast
nice, non cheap looking cover,
great verizon reception (can you hear me now? Yup, sure can)
external display with caller id
bluetooth enabled
expandable memory
alarm, calendar, calculator, etc
keypad is easy to dial
speaker phone

now the cons:
menu is wayy over simplified, not too many options
for an MP3 player, there is not way to upload mp3's onto your phone. bluetooth is only good for headphones, and voice activation. No PC to phone cable yet.. (which also means no way of tranfsering images either)
Camera is horrible. unless your outside in broad daylight, don't bother. and the quality is bad. "flash" doesn't do a thing.
expandable memory card slot - no information is listed in user manual, verizon representatives do not even know this slot exists.
battery life is short, but you knew this already

I purchased this phone the first day it came out at radio shack, so my 15 days are over. to be honest, i really do like the phone, i'm just extremely disappointed with all the features that turned out to be a flop. i bought the phone with hopes of being able to take decent qaulity photos. In japan they actually have phones that do pretty much every thing the v710 says it will do, but actually follow through (minus the bluetooth) So for me, a poor college student, i thought this could be a phone/camera/(mp3 player) that could last me a few years... instead, i have a horrible camera that cannot transfer pics to my pc, an mp3 player that i cannot upload mp3 to, and a cell phone that costed me 320. (im waiting for the rebate)
If motorola would fix these problems, i'd be such a happy camper. MOTOROLA DO SOMETHING!

Sounds Like Verizon is your problem

Just reading thru most the post and the ones that are complaining the most are the Verizon ones.... Verizon is all about the money and not about the customer... Maybe you should find a different carrier...

v710, TIRED of people lying

Dec 28, 2004 by eldza3000

Anyone who pretends this phone is good is only doing so because they are trying to convince themselves they didn't waste their $300.
I am a professional who expects a product to accurately match it's specifications and claims. I also expect a product that I rely on to be constructed well and be durable. One of the biggest reasons I purchased this phone was to take advantage of being able to take 1.3 megapixel pictures for my business. Anyone with half a brain can obviously understand that they are paying a price for a premium camera and getting a camera that takes archaic pictures. Before this phone I had a Samsung 300K phone that took FAR superior pictures. After this phone I got an LG6100 which also takes FAR superious pictures. The "1.3 Megapixel" camera on this phone is a scam, and you are foolish for claiming otherwise.
As far as the construction of this phone.. play with it a little. Press on the panels, open it. It makes all kinds of noises, the plastic bends and creaks. It feels like it's about to fall apart. The phone doesn't flip open all the way on it's own springs, you have to assist it. The buttons themselves are in a very strange arrangement. The overall engineering is terrible.
Anyone honest with any sense of quality would obviously not have great things to say, especially professionals who expect a higher level of quality from products that support them. It's sad that people don't write honest reviews because they are ashamed for being suckers.

Piece of s*** phone

Dec 27, 2004 by dizasta

I was so excited to get this phone for christmas. There I was under the tree staring at it! Megapixel camera, bluetooth, speakerphone, sleek looking... The next hour I grew to be more and more disappointed with the v710.
First off, the physical design of the phone is terrible. I like when a clamshell phone opens up firmly and the top maintains enough momentum to fully open. The v710 needs assistance opening, like it's already been beaten up and the springs are dead. The construction of the phone itself is bad, the phone makes all kinds of creaking noises. The battery life is terrible, it didn't even make it a full day after a full charge. The outside screen is very poor and to save the battery all the displays completely black out, there is no sign the phone is even on. All these negatives are without even getting into the fact that one of the main buying points is the "1.3 megapixel camera". Honestly, the camera performs more poorly than cameras on 0.3 megapixel phones that are $50. It is the worst, the photos it produces look primitive. People used to produce clearer pictures 20,000 years ago etching pictures into wood. It's really sad that Motorola would put their name on this. This was my first Motorola and it will be my last. I returned it today and am waiting for an LG. It was also my first day with Verizon after 6 years dealing with Sprint's horrid customer service. It didn't exactly make me happy about being a new Verizon customer.
