Yes, I see a lot of comments regaurding the phone having dropped calls as well as a SIM error message. The reason for this is your SIM card itself. I work for an authorized dealer and can tell you the phone is a good phone. To fix the SIM error message as well as dropped calls your sim must NOT be a 3G SIM. The regular 64k will solve this problem. You can go to a corporate Cingular store for a new FREE SIM.
SGH-417 is error-prone.
My wife and I have had this model with Cingular for about three months now. The biggest problem we are having with them is that about two or three times a day, the phones give this error message that the SIM card should be inserted. This message happens at random so far as we can tell. Otherwise, it is a cute little phone. Another problem with it is that, it is hard to hold and talk because of its size.
Samsung c-417
We bought this phone for my son for his birthday. One of the main reasons we bought this phone was because it has bluetooth well we found out pretty quickly that it will only blue tooth to a headset you can't do object exchange and any of the pictures you take are stuck on the phone unless you get a cable to put them on your computer. When I contacted Samsung about this they told me it was a typo in the manual that it would only bluetooth to a handset. When I contacted Cingular they told me they didn't always disclose everything about a phone. Needless to say I'm very disappointed in Samsung and Cingular!
As far ask everything else about this phone it's a pretty good starter phone for a kid or someone who doesn't care about using bluetooth to object exchange or transfer pictures.
Great Phone
This phone is actually a really good buy. I did read that other consumers were complaining about the phone saying INSERT SIM and having dropped calls and all that. The reason why this happens is because this phone does not work with the New SIMS that came out(blue and white ones that say 3G). So if you are experiencing this problem you have to go to a cingular store and tell them to give you the 64K SIM(White and Orange), This is the only one that works with this phone. Ones you do that, your Samsung C417 will work great!
Pros: big screen, big buttons, loud ringer and speaker volume and very easy to use.
Cons: When you are using the speaker phone you hear a buzzing sound. Doesn't really affect me much because I hardly ever use it.
overall good
I have only had this phone for a month, but I think it works great. I didn't like the samsung before, but this one is good. I'll just go through a few things about it.
Pros
- Battery lasts a few days. Unless you use it alot per day.
- Thin like the razar, but also sturdy.
- Has a decently loud speaker phone for if driving or busy with your hands.
- I get good service in the Syracuse area.
- You can personalize a ring tone and photo for your numbers. You also can put more than one number per name.
- Front screen to see who's calling.
- You can personalize the main screen with pictures you take on the phone.
- There is alot more I like about it, but I don't feel like listing on here all day.
Cons
- The back battery cover is kind of hard to get off, but I suppose that's a good thing too.
- The charger plugs in to the top side under a weird little door that will probably break off after along time of use.
- This one isn't my own personal problem, but my father has bigger fingers and has a hard time hitting the arrow keys. Which has caused him to get on the internet occasionally.
I really can't think of much else wrong with this phone. So I hope this helped you with your decision on a phone.
Poor Reception
I got this phone because it's small. I don't need the bells and whistles. I have an iPod for music, and a Palm TX for everything else. I figured that if a phone was made with not many extra features, like this one, they would focus on making the phone good. Wrong. My calls are dropped where with my Nokia, I could have a fine conversation.
The bluetooth also only supports headsets. It can't be paired with my Palm, or my PC.
PROS:
Sturdy
Good UI
CONS:
Poor signal
Bluetooth is lacking features
Phone positioning-Bluetooth
This phone is in the value category in the Cingular lineup; although you will get alot for your money you will not get all of the Bluetooth profiles. If you want the transfer capability get the 807, hope this helps
disappointed
We just purchased four of these phones yesterday. Will probably end up returning them because of the following:
Regarding the Bluetooth functionality.
It only supports the "headphone" profile.
You cannot transfer data (photos) to/from the phone and your computer with Bluetooth.
Also, a data cable does not appear to be an option (not available for this phone on the Samsung Web site). Therefore the only way to transfer photos off of the phone is by emailing from the camera (at a cost of 25 cents each). It appears that they (Cingular / Samsung) have intentionally limited the file transfer functionality so you must use the network to get your photos. Other phones allow file transfers at this price point...don't buy this phone if you take a lot of photos. This is a major disappointment and ripoff!
