Fantastic phone!!!!

Jun 26, 2004 by queenbee

As the manager of a wireless biz I get to try out all the phones before we sell them, my favorite part of the job! So imagine my delight to try the new t637.

Have been playing with it all day and I love the features-
Great color display
Clear camera function w/ choice of pix size!
Easy to navigate menu
Voice command features are awesome!
Strong signal in buildings (AT&T, Madison, WI area)
Loud ringers and speaker
BLUETOOTH!!!! (Once you get a bluetooth headset, you will never go back!)
Lightweight and compact

My one question is-how do you change the right hotkey from mmode to something else? This already has a key on the side of the phone for online access!

I LOVE it, however...

The keys are spaced too closely together. I prefer the layout of the T616, especially for my oversized digits. Also, I wish that either the keys or cover were differently coloured. The monotone "mocha" is a bit, well, monotonous. Call-quality in my very hilly and wooded area (Tulalip, Wa. - West of Marysville and about 50 miles North of Seattle) is generally very good but not on a par with CDMA which I consider to be excellent. I just got it yesterday and am still in the 30-day evaluation period with AT&T so I have not yet had a chance to try out all of the features.

Back to basics

I have this phone for 10 days with Cingular in Central NJ. Reception is acceptable in most places, however does not match the VZW. Spotty service in NJ trains to NYC.

I found one problem with the phone that makes it hardly acceptable for use in noisy environments. The ring volume is much too low even on the highest setting. I miss many calls, unless the phone is on me. Do not leave this phone in your bag or in another room when at home.

The free image editing and communications software failed to install. Uninstall did not work.

The synchronization software worked well.

Could've done better

After owning a T637 for one week,I know I should have bought motorola. Purchased a V180 for my wife at the same time,I have done side by side signal and sound checks and the V180 beats it every time.
Pros: Small easy to carry
Cons: Poor signal strength, cheesy ringtones, uncustomizable menu

perfect phone

I have had this phone for about a week now and it is the best phone i have had. before that i have the crappiest Motorola and the audiovox. This phone has very good reception, great looking, easy to use, the camera is fast and takes quality pictures.
The only bad this is that it doest have a big choice of . But thats not a big deal.

I have this phone with Cingular and so far it is a good service!

basically this is a very good phone and i recommend to everyone

A bit of digression... Had nothing but service and equipment problems ever since upgrading phone(s) with VZW in Nov. 2003. Tried Audiovox CDM-8600, LG VX-6000, and multiple Motorola T730s (most current phone) without getting satisfactory resolution. Hey VZW, I getting rid of you guys... As a (former) long-time customer, Can YOU hear ME now?

Recently (Nov. 2004) switched from VZW to ATTWS (now Cingular). I know, most people go the other way... Phone has been used mainly in Metro NY area (NYC and Long Island). Started with Nokia 3120 but had same problem with 2 different phones (buzzing in the phone earpiece). Now have SonyEricsson T637.

PROs:
- feature rich (camera, calendar, alarm, calculator, bluetooth, IR, and more...) but won't use most of them or will be used rarely
- decent battery life (approx 5 to 6 days) - mixed, but mostly on standby, usage... much better than T730, which I had to charge every 1-1/2 to 2 days, even if only in standby
- signal strength was as good as, and many times better than, T730
- decent earpiece volume, although I had some initial problems with finding the sweetspot (user error, I guess)
- combo vibrate and ring

CONs:
- small keypad
- (relatively) low ringers
- menus not intuitive, but getting used to them
- call log only shows name and date of call, but not the time of call, if reveiwing log from prior day(s)
- bad mMode button placement
- camera is mediocre, but hey, it's a phone for goodness sake

Although the phone has some quirks, overall, I am very satisfied.

Crap!

CONS- I give it a 2 because this phone gets terrible reception. You can sit there and watch the reception bars and they will literally jump from 4 down to 2 then back up to 3 then down to 1 or none, then maybe jump back up to 3. It's just so inconsistant. There are times when I have to turn the phone off then back on again in order for the phone to pick up any reception (and I live only 1/2 a mile from a tower for crying out loud!) It claims to be tri-band working on the GSM 850/1800/1900 frequencies, but when I took it to the UK last month, it didn't pick up a damn thing, even after I put a UK sim card in it! That's my biggest gripe with this phone. And since the primary function of a phone is to get reception so that you can talk on it, this phone is absolute crap.

PROS- It looks very nice, and it's quite small and stylish....That's about it.

Conclusion- If you're looking for a tri-band phone with a camara and all those other features, get the Siemens S66. Siemens phones get the best reception by far out of any make of phone (and I've owned Sony, Motorola, LG, and Siemens). Bottom line, if you remotely care about getting any kind of good reception, don't get this phone. Get the Siemens S66. It looks better and performs better.

This phone is great if you dont mind its petite size. Great reception throughout canada and most of the US. I've used it in most states and found the only problems with reception were in NJ. I like the features of this phone, the camera is easy to use but the pics are poorly represented on the phone screen. the pics are much more crisp if you send them to an email account. the only other option that would improve this phone would be customizing the menu, witch you are unable to do on this sony. easy to navigate, easy to use, love the bluetooth. not a bad phone if you dont mind its size and closely set keys.
