One word: Elegant
If I could use only one word to describe this phone , it would be elegant - in its form, its aesthetics, in how it operates, in how it feels, in how it sounds. Everything it does, it does extremely well. The phone's RF is unmatched, its UI is the best. This is my first GSM phone, having been with Verizon forever, and nothing comes close to it. Yes, there is the call log issue and the contacts issue, but they are extremely minor and will be fixed. But for the way this phone works, sounds, and all the great features that a Series 60 phone offers, including great PC sync, terrific bluetooth (sounds great with a Cellpoint Flamingo), wonderful speakerphone, and rock solid construction, this is as good as 2005 technology will allow us to get - elegant!
Great phone
First, WRT cingcing's comment above, this phone does recognize 512 rs-mmc - I've one in the phone right now almost filled w/ apps and mp3s
Second, only negatives so far are a crippled native email app (replaced w/ ProfiMail), and nokia bookmarks all point to http://am.mobile.nokia.com/am which loads a page informing you that "Your Handset is not recongnized" Stupid nokia! (Note it does load other *.mobile.nokia.com sites!) Final complaint is wrt Nokia. I've used SE phones for several years, and appreciated that SE provided a current consistent accessory line. At present, there is no docking or charging station for this phone. Dumb. And here's an idea that I'm waiting for - a docking station w/ an integrated memory card reader.
Other than that can only echo the positives above. For my tastes, this phone is without peer - form factor, speed, flexibility, symbian implementation are all OUTSTANDING.
I love this Phone
I adore this phone. I have had no hardware, sim card, memory card issues. My call logs are not lost- and the phone does not shut itself off. I love the keypad-still getting to used to actually using the call and diconnect buttons. The mp3's sound great, the pictures are great and I love the movie editor. I'm not a person who can go into tech details- but I love that I can take my music and pics with me everywhere and the software is really easy to use. I couldn't be happier with this phone. My only cons are my lack of knowledge about where to find information. I have an awesome cingular store by my house that has been really helpful too.
Potentially a Great phone, but...
Pros:
1) Series 60 infrastructure allows for downloading of programs that will fit your custom needs: profimail, opera, vitrual radio, virgin mobile, etc...
2) Phone is pretty easy to use and the RF is excellent on this device especially in comparison to the SMT 5600.
3) Nokia still puts out great phones.
4) Speakerphone is pretty loud
5) Can watch movies on it, if that is what you want...
Cons:
1) Phone was released with numerous glitches: 1) Call log erases if you turn off the phone, 2) If you turn off the phone, phone will ask you to resubmit contact list from SIM to phone (every time), 3) If you have too many applications/programs open, phone will go white screen on you and reset which causes a repeat of numbers 1 and 2, 4) Phone will randomly loose connection with your bluetooth headset, especially SE headsets.
2) why on God's green earth did Nokia choose the Dual Voltage RS MMC. There are tons of external storage cards on the market and Nokia chooses the one card that you literally can't find in the US unless you go online and pay a carjacked fee for...
Allegedly, Nokia is working on a flash program to eliminate the 1st two problems from recurring. If not, then I am off to the HTC tornado.
This phone has so much potential and Nokia or Cingular should step up and fix the issue.
Would give it a 5 if it didn't have the two major glitches in the software...
So Far, The Best Phone on the Market in US
I shall not belabor the cons and pros that all others have stated except to say that the call log issue, at least on my phone, is minor. Call logs are lost only if I remove the battery. Turning off the phone and back on has no effect on the call logs.
This phone is easily the best phone in the US and for $219.99, I received this Cingular branded phone. Yes, $219.99, not $299.99. Maybe Cingular erred in the price, but my AMEX bill does not lie.
Now, what would make this the perfect phone? Nothing yet, but if Nokia would take the 6682 and add UMTS/HSDPA AND make it UMS enabled, change the body to stainless steel or a polycarbonate, it would be the perfect phone. Since UMA and UMTS/HSDPA is scheduled for release early 2006 at the latest, it won't be long to wait.
Since I purchase the latest and greatest phone every 6 months, I should be elated once again in about March if my wish of the perfect phone would occur.
Thanks, Nokia. I left you 2 years ago and I am glad I'm back.
NOT ENOUGH TESTING
Cingular tooks this great phone and ruined it, limiting its many abilities. I am returning it and going back to my Nokia 3220...Shame on you cingular
Great phone
I was using the Nokia 6230 and now I can't go back. The GPS with the way finder service works great. I had purchased a 1GB MMC for my 6230 but I cant use it anymore which is disappointing but I like the hot swappable RS-MMC.
Phone needs some work
Overall I like the feel and look of the phone and the camera is nice and being able to use my bluetooth headset is awesome. But there are software issues with this phone like my phone freezes up and when you turn your phone off and then on you lose all your call logged calls. I think this phone might hurt Nokia's reputation for being one of the least return phone but I hope not because I have used a Nokia before and it worked great. All and all wait till Nokia recalls this phone and fix the software issues it is having before buying one.
Pretty Good, With Issues
This is the second Nokia Series 60 phone I've had, though I had the 6620 only briefly. I returned that one because it was too plasticy, too big, too slow (software-wise), crashed too much, etc. I ended up getting a Nokia 6230 phone instead.
Fast-forward to 3 months ago, when my Nokia 6230 broke and Cingular didn't have any in stock... since it had a camera and bluetooth, the only Nokia phone they had that matched that was the Nokia 6682. Needless to say, it was a HUGE upgrade for free, which was cool.
I've had the phone for three months, but just sent it back today because it TOO had problems. It randomly shut off all the time, but it wasn't a battery issue (would do it when plugged in too). Anyway, they never really fully carried the 6682 so I got a Sony Ericsson w600i today... I'm not loving it but oh well. Anyway:
PROs:
- Big, clear screen.
- Decent 1.3mp cameraphone--nothing compared to a digital camera, obviously, but good for a cellphone.
- Series 60.
- Light sensor is a good idea for battery life (see cons, though).
CONs:
- Buttons are TINY. I mean, people say it's not too bad but it can be VERY bad to use, especially since the keypad is so low on the phone, when you're using it with one hand it's really unevenly weighted.
- Camera slide cover is really cheap and plastic and while I doubt it will break off easily, it does creak a lot (and I HATE that).
- Big phone (thick and tall/wide) and heavy.
- Series 60, while better than the last time I saw it, still crashes frequently and is slow and buggy. Too much so for an every day phone as far as I am concerned.
- Camera could still be better.
- Not a great amount of battery time, especially if you use the camera, internet or bluetooth at all.
- Light sensor can be annoying if, say, you're walking at night and you pass under a bright light just as it takes a reading, because the backlight will turn off and then you'll have to walk for a while in the dark until it re-reads.
We'll see how the w600 goes.
MORE THAN IMPRESSED, BELIEVE THE HYPE
I was a faithful motorola follower and I would swear by anything moto put out. Well recently I had the ROKR for at least two weeks and once a friend that works for Cingular told me about this phone and its features I had to jump all over it. One thing is that I will never need an ipod again cause this plays as much if not more music than the ROKR and you can store pics and flixs alike on here. Bottom line is this phone is king. Go cop one....A.S.A.P!
