A310--good but can still be improved
The indigo display screen is excellent! The screen is very easy to read even in poor lighting conditions. Menu is intuitive and easy to use. However, the ringtones are not downloadable. The phone's ringtones are not 'appropriate' for business use. The battery life is somewhat short. Overall, the A310 is not worth the price.
Locks up about once a week
Got this phone from RadioShack for $50 early november 2003. Initially loved it's voice clarity and features, although the menus are alittle weird and the battery life was poor. Downloadable ringtones would also have been a plus.
All this I could have lived with until it locked up a week later. It would appear to be working normally when making a call but it would never connect. Tried to turn it off but would then lock up in the shutdown screen displaying verizon. Finally had to pull the battery out to reset it.
Took it back and got a replacement which over the next couple of weeks also locked up 3 more times. Scanned the newsgroups for help but the results were mixed. This unit had the latest vl17 software but was still flakey.
Wanted to submit this review so people would know there are still issues with it.
Finally spent more $$ on a moto t730 today. I hope I will have a better experience with it.
Samsung A310 has a very low ringer
I have had this phone for 10 months now. It only locked up on me once (where you have to take the battery out and put it back). I can't say I get many dropped calls but I don't really use it that much. Reception seems fine. I like the voice recorder, I use that feature more than I thought I would.
The Ringer sucks big time. The only one I have a chance of hearing is #5. My sister has a kyocera (non flip) and you can hear that ringer if it's in her purse. If my phone is underneath something you will not hear the ringer. I am not crazy about the location of the volume button on the side, I tend to press that inadvertently sometimes turning the ringer off. The cases for this phone are terrible, I bought the leather case as a package with the car charger. The phone got knocked off my belt so much I went with a third party case I got at computer show for 13 bucks. Same goes for the plastic case that comes with the phone. Battery life seems OK but I tend to recharge it every night. The menus especially the phone book are not to easy to use. To access the number for home for example its 3 button presses to get to it and then send. Sometimes volume can be a problem but that may be because the other party is using a speaker phone. For all you people who complain about battery life, you have a bad battery or maybe even a used battery. Old rechargeable batterys are known for not holding a charge, so if the battery goes dead quickly it's the battery not the phone. Having worked for a retail store with a poor rep, I know from experiance that the replacement battery/phone you got was probably returned by someone else
It seems to have all the features other phones have like a scheduler with a reminder(but with a bad ringer), calculator, voice recorder, and memo. It would be nice if you could put addresses along with names
OK, no cigar
Bought to replace Audiovox 9000, this fone uses the 5100 chipset, but does NOT support either BREW or Bluetooth. Although my major interest is using the fone as a modem for my sub-notebook computer and eventual E911/GPS/Location-Based Services with included GPS. The three most beneficial features for upgrading to the first phase of 3G are GPS/LBS/E911, max modem data rates of 307K (144K now, but after network upgrades next year it doubles with this chipset) and the possibility of a wireless headset using Bluetooth. I think it's unconscionable that Samsung chose not to implement BREW and Bluetooth. I don't forsee much need for BREW until LBS services finally get launched by Verizon... which is currently not even mentioning in ads that the feature exists! For less techie needs, the rings and vibrates were waaay to faint to be usable and I missed several calls. Part of that is because the fone is TOO small and doesn't have enough oooomph to alert the user if it's in a pocket. I also didn't think the monochrome blue screen had enough contrast to easily distinguish all the tiny icons and indicators when backlit or not. It certainly would need a fat battery for decent duration, which was not available. Lastlly, phone could not be externally powered simultaneously with the data cable connected. This point is absolutely ESSENTIAL for anyone who plans to use the fone as a modem to do more than the briefest email downloading. I'll share this with Samsung prduct Mgr, Jim Parker at the CTIA show in Las Vegas next week. Mykl Parsons, TeKnowledgist
What a waste of a good phone
i am a dealer of verizon phones, and da samsung a310 is a waste. i have the phone, and the features are great and all but the battery life is horrible. i called my other stores and dey gave me the same results. i am gonna exchange it this week for the motorola t720, which is an excellent phone

I have had two a310's and both cracked as mentioned. Too bad it is really a good phone...
had couple problems with it
I liked the display. the battery life wasn't the best. Storing new phones took long. couldn't dial speed numbers and didn't have caller names on caller id. only the numbers of those calling. but as I read now I just have to store the #'s without "1" in front of the area code.
still don't know how to deal with speed dial.
