700 MHz Spectrum Auction On Track
Apr 3, 2002, 4:34 PM by (staff)
The 700 MHz auction scheduled to begin in June will go ahead as planned, FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy said today. The spectrum is currently used by television broadcasters, but is slated to become new spectrum for wireless carriers to use for expansion and new, bandwidth-hungry 3G networks. Wireless carriers are calling for a delay due to the uncertain timetable for broadcasters' departure from the frequencies. Television broadcasters have until 2006 or until 85 percent of Americans can receive digital TV signals to move from the 700 MHz band.
