Lucent Technologies this week announced it has completed the industry's first high-speed data call on commercial UMTS wireless equipment operating in the 1900 MHz (PCS) spectrum band. Lucent successfully tested a variety of services, including video streaming. The tests achieved speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps). UMTS is the 3G standard chosen by GSM operators around the world. US GSM operators, including AT&T Wireless, Cingular, and VoiceStream, have all announced plans to move to UMTS, although there have been concerns about how to make UMTS work within available US spectrum.
