AT&T Wireless this week quietly launched the Nokia 6200, the world's first GSM phone with EDGE technology. The company is currently testing EDGE service in several markets, and "expects to have EDGE deployed throughout the network by the second half of 2003 and available to launch commercially by the end of the year", said AT&T Wireless spokesperson Ritch Blasi. EDGE, an enhancement for GSM/GPRS service, provides data speeds nearly triple that of standard GPRS. Blasi said "customers will be able to receive data speeds averaging 135kbps", depending on the device used. The 6200 also supports AT&T's existing GPRS service. The phone is currently available to customers ordering by phone, and will be available in stores by the middle of the month.
