The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Vodafone has given Verizon Wireless the green-light to make a bid to buy Sprint. Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless. Such a bid could disrupt final negotiations for a merger between Sprint and Nextel, a deal that is tentatively scheduled to be announced tomorrow in New York. Verizon Communications has been studying a potential Sprint takeover for 18 months, but even with the nod from Vodafone, it is not clear if Verizon will go ahead with the bid. A successful acquisition of Sprint would return Verizon Wireless to the #1 spot, with 65 million customers, after being unseated two months ago when Cingular absorbed AT&T Wireless.

Life would be over as we know it!
I would hate to think I would be a Verizon customer. Lots of things that sprint does that verizon dont ..and I wouldnt see verizon changing anything. Worst would be to let verizon get their hands on the sanyo phones !!! BOOOO. Thats all they need is a phone they can lag, so it dont come out for 2 years and start making sanyo look lame.No thanks Im happy to be sprint or sprint/ nextel.

To be honest being a sprint/nextel customer really wont o nearly as much when compared to being a Verizon Customer. Verizon's network covers 3X the amount of area as sprint and there customer base is much larger so thats many more people you can talk ...

but, why you just see the bad things from VZW? they have also may services that sprint don't(like IM). An if Verizon buy out sprint, they together would have the best wireles service in all US: verizon would be able to bring us new modern cell phones,...

I really like Verizon Wireless. I have a been a customer for over 3 years now. I have tried other cell phone carriers. I think it would be good for sprint to get bought out by verizon. Sprint sucks, so bad! everyone that i know, that has sprint, hates...

If Verizon wireless were to purchase Sprint or Alltel then it wouldn't be long before Cingular would try to take over T-mobile USA. This would not be a good thing because you would have a CDMA monopoly and a GSM monopoly, thus causing prices to rise ...

Verizon/Alltel
The whold merger of Verizon/Sprint is just talk. Sprint/Nextel would be lame too. VZW is one of the best wireless companies in the world financially and cust satisfaction wise. Sprint should sell Sprint PCS to Nextel if they do decide to merge. I can see Verizon buying out Alltel before they buy out Sprint PCS. 1. Verizon roams off Alltel in the midwest, so buying Alltel will lower cost by having less roaming charges. 2. Alltel picked up OK lic/spectrum from Cingular as part of the ATTWS merger and Verizon needs that market. 3. it's more realistic that buying Sprint. VZW should start a IPO before any larger merger anyways. its nice having deep pockets with Ma (Vodafone) and Pa (Verizon Communication) backing, but VZW will be better of...

Verizon actually makes more money off of alltel than it would be worth to purchase them. All the rest of Alltel's "Nationwide" network is mostly Verizon wireless. That is why Alltel's roaming charges are so high. The only reason Verizon would purchase...

WoooHooo!!!!
Verizon still is the best cell phone provider. Even though Cingular is the biggest, Verizon has the best voice quality, and recepetion. CDMA all the way!!!! A sprint and verizon merger would be an unstopable team If occured. As far as nextel, well they're screwed. Maybe after verizon buys sprint verizon will buy nextel as well. Woohoo!!!
lol ... fanboys are funneh.
you're right VZW is the best cell phone privider becuase they have the best network. And why do they have the best network? becuse the use the best tecnologie: CDMA.
That's why nextel is interested in a merger with sprint, they want a best network, n...

So what does this mean now that Sperint and Nextell are together? Does this mean that Verizon no longer has the chance to aquire sprint?

FUD
verzon-sprint is never going to pass the regulators, not even under president G.W. corporate puppet bush's administration.
Verizon is making noise to screw this merger up to weaken a potential competitor. That is okay but it does not mean we should buy it. An attempted and then failed verizon-sprint merger would screw sprint and it would screw nextel, leaving verizon sitting pretty.
There is potential value to a sprint/verizon merger but getting approval is a low odds game and verizon must know that.
Incidentally Verizon would still have more subs than a nextel-sprint combo and they will probably have more than cingular-ATT soon as well.
I don't understand, why could'nt verizon-sprint merger pass the regulators?
there is no any monopoly, because there is still cingular.

Verizon is scared.
Verizon knows that this duo isnt SUPER big, but can be. If the sprint /nextel makes it...and then ATTWS starts to sell under sprint, Sprint will have alot more means of gaining customers then verizon..and that might be bad news for them.
1.Sprint PCS
2.Nextel
3.Virgin Mobile
4.Boost
5.ATTWS
6.Qwest....that seems to be alot of ways to gain customers..and thats bad news for others.
whatever happens, verizon/sprint or sprint/nextel it wuold benefit us as customers

Networks
π Ok someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Sprint uses GSM network. Right? Verizon uses CDMA. How would this merger work anyways? They use two different networks so would Sprint Customers need new phone or Verizon Customers need new phone depending on the network used.
No. Both Sprint and Verizon utilize CDMA networks, therefore are compatible. However, if they did merge (which is doubtful) some customers may be required to get a new phone.

why?
I love Sprint so much. My parents have Verizon, and it sucks here in Vegas. I dont like Verizon. What will happen to me, and all of the other sprint customers? Sprints phones are far better, will they get rid of them, or will it just be like Cingular and ATT. I dont know but i dont like this new one carrier domination thats trying to happen here.
Sprint and Verizon coverage would merge where you have coverage and your parents don't and vise versa you will both have signal π . most likely you can keep your phone π .
It has begun...
Soon Verizon will take over everything! π
Soon you will have to go through G.I.N. just to buy food and toilet paper. π
Personally, I hope VZW takes Sprint and Nextel. That would be awesome. π
Finally, cool business phones from Verizon in a timely fashion.

if VZW takes sprint and nextel, the northamerican CDMA market will grow up a lot and would benefit us(the customers) because they would be able to bring modern cell phones with bluetooth,built-in camera, and the prices will be the lowest.

Not Happened Yet
I don't think this will go through due to the amount of money sprint is throwing towards Nextel. Verizon would have to really ante up and probly have to buy out both, and for what? Why would they need them? More customers? Buying the no. 3 and 5 carriers. I though Verizon had a good network why would they need more coverage? This deal would be almost a 100 billion dollar deal I would think if the sprint Netxtel is 36 billion. That is a lot!!
As far as anti-trust, the FCC doesn't do regulate nearly as much as your think, they could find a way around it but it would take at least year and a half. Especially since GSM is a totally different technology and this is phone business albeit wireless, many people still look at it like a natura...

The following is a full transcript of a report issued by CNBC reporter David Faber on Tuesday:Early tomorrow morning, Sprint Corp. (FON) and Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) will announce their merger... A deal in which Sprint will pay Nextel shareholders a price equivalent to 1.3 shares of Sprint stock, which while made up almost entirely of that stock, will also include a small dollop of cash. Sprint and Nextel will also announce their plans, after their merger closes, to spin off Sprint's local exchange business, which currently comprises roughly 7.7 million access lines. And tomorrow morning, officials at Verizon Wireless and its parent Verizon Communications (VZ), will ta...

So if verizon ends up getting sprint would cingular go after nextel? What are the pro's and con's
π³ And which one should cingular if they wanted to go after?! Sprint or Nextel? Who gives them the bigger customer technological boost and base?
Cingular has just spent the last 6 years getting all their networks under the same technology. I doubt they would even want to have to do that again. So I wouldn't expect to see Cingular even touch this deal.
But, since this is all hypothetical, ...

Rise of the Empire
Emperor Vodafone has sent Darth Verizon out to terrizone telecommunications. They're gonna buy everyone! First they almost got ATTWS, now maybe Sprint. We're all nothing but mindless, disposable stormtroopers in their galactic empire! And only a small band of rebels led by Cingular and T Mobile can stop them. Who's buying my script? Any takers?

...Speaking of Anti-Trust Lawsuits
geez.... this is going to start a frenzy. π
I really don't think it would be economically wise for VZW to do it... especially after the FCC and DoJ butcher the merger....
Maybe. But a formal bid won't happen unless the FCC and DOJ indicate that such a buyout/merger is possible. If that's the case, then expect it to happen.
Actually there is no real anti-trust issue here. If you look at other industries consolodation has been the rule rather than the exception. There are only three real credible video game suppliers, only a handful of oil companies and only 2 real comput...
