Time-Warner Looking to Enter MVNO Game

Reuters and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that Time Warner is in talks to offer cell phone service over Sprint's network on a trial basis early in 2005. The deal would make Time Warner the only major cable company able to offer cell phone, television, high-speed Internet, and land-line phone services, all on one bill. The initial trial would start in Kansas City, Missouri, in the first quarter of next year, according to sources. Such a deal would make Time Warner an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), a company that provides cell phone service independently, but uses the network of another company. Sprint already has MVNO relationships with Virgin, Qwest, ESPN, AT&T, and Liberty Wireless. The companies have confirmed negotiations, but declined to discuss details.
