Microsoft noted today that Windows Phone 8 devices will be able to receive and install significant system updates over the air. Currently, Windows Phone devices must be plugged via USB cable into a PC to update system software. Further, Microsoft committed to providing system updates to Windows Phone 8 devices for a period of 18 months following their release into the market. Windows Phone 8 will support a total of 50 languages and the Marketplace will be functional in 180 countries. Other new features headed to the platform include better multitasking behavior, such as with navigation apps that continue to run in the background, and new VoIP integration that will allow developers to create VoIP-based apps that work with the native dialer. Last, Windows Phone 8 will support in-app payments for Marketplace applications.
