Sprint, Nextel Shareholders Approve Merger
Jul 13, 2005, 12:07 PM by (staff)
Sprint shareholders approved the Sprint-Nextel merger today, following Nextel shareholders' approval of the deal this morning. The two carriers have now cleared a majority of the hurdles towards a merger. The companies still await FCC approval; a decision is expected from the commission at the end of the month. In addition, Nextel still needs to settle a suit with Nextel Partners, an exclusive reseller for rural areas, which is concerned about their post-merger options. Sprint recently agreed to purchase US Wireless before the merger in order to settle a suit the affiliate was using to delay merger. Update: Sprint is now being sued by a second affiliate, Ubiquitel, which could further delay merger proceedings, or force Sprint to buy yet another reseller.
