T-Mobile Starts Bidding Swinging For The Fences

In the first round of bidding for AWS spectrum, T-Mobile committed the most money. Out of $769 million dollars in top bids, well over half - $437 million - is bids T-Mobile is currently winning. The carrier, which needs new spectrum more than any other national operator, is currently in the lead for 19 Metro Area licenses and 12 regional licenses. No other bidder has currently crossed the $100 million mark, with MetroPCS coming the closest at $79.5 million. The second round of bidding will take place this afternoon. Bidding continues on licenses until no further bids are placed on it. Once a license has gone a whole round with no bids, that auction is closed. Bidding will usually continue for days until all licenses have gone a round uncontested, unless special circumstances arise.

Please explain and clarify about Spectrum...

Not to sound uneducated but can someone please clarify and explain in very basic terms for me what it means for T-Mobile and all of its customers that they get more spectrum??? Does this mean more towers?? Better signal strength?? I am one who cannot stand the fact that I travel in so many areas where I get no service or poor signal strength. Does it mean more technology options? Sorry to not seem clear but I just would like some clarification I am a little foggy on just EXACTLY what it means that T-Mobile get MORE SPECTRUM.

Spectrum is a way to enhance the portfolio, to enhance the coverage area of those areas, and to improve on the capacity. This will allow them to put more spectrums on the towers, which will enhance the capacity, and coverage and allow more services fo...

When is Verizon getting this Baby???

How long do the rest of us have to wait??? Beuller, Beuller...
Uh... Verizon already has 3G services.... If you're talking about the new multimedia blackberry, please re-post in the forums there about it, not here.

Unfortunately, they will not go after T-mobile because it isn't in the best interest for Verizon Wireless. There is no point of doing so. A company that Verizon could acquire might be Alltel. Alternatively, T-mobile can go after Alltel also.

Great job Tmobile so far

Well as you guys know, without this spectrum, T-Mobile will be in a world of trouble because a carrier needs to diversify itself from voice and enter the data arena. As you know T-Mobile does not really have anything that is good in the data arena such as 3g or 4g services that can compete with the rest of the pack. They are great with voice and prepaid but not great with data and they need to improve and get better on the data arena. If they are successful they could be a great competitor going forward, but more importantly if they come out well, they can do HSDPA/HSUPA like Cingular is and will be doing and will decrease costs for the consumer and help themselves, T-mobile, in the market place.

It should be interesting going forward.

LOL... spending all that cash...

Sprint made out like a bandit (spectrum-wise) when they scooped up Nextel.
how did they make it out like a bandit? its not like they aquired any new service area.... nextel didnt even have a big spectrum.... the only thing they gained was more business customers....

And don't forget that Sprint already had GOBS of 1900mhz spectrum. It wasn't like they were lacking or anything. What rea...

Spectrum Frequencies?

Someone said it was 1700/2100. If T-Mobile gets 2100 spectrum and has 3G services will that mean it will be compatible with 3G phones in Europe using 2100 frequency? If so, a lot more cool phones will be available...and unlocked at that.
European 3G phones will not work on the frequencies acquired in this auction. The 2100 band is only half of the picture. 3G technology uses one band for uplink and one for downlink - in Europe, it is 2100/1900. Since the spectrum currently being aucti...

Yeah for sure, T-Mobile execs said repeatedly they would fight hard for a great portion of the spectrum in the auction. Don't everyone start rooting acting all surprised... this has been said for quite some time.

Spectrum relation to T-Mobile at home. Part of the plan

Ok. So for those of you who know what T-Mobile at home is. It is basically Wifi enabled phones, using a wireless router for phone reception at home. What this means to customer's is guaranteed flawless home reception and unlimited free calling from these routers, I say these routers because T-Mobile at Home "if the name stays that way" will involve the use of T-Mobile hotspots as unlimited free calling zones as well. What does this all have to do with spectrum???

The launch of the increased coverage due to the 850/1900 spectrum purchased has been proposed to launch at a similar time as T-Mobile at home, and at that time, T-Mobile is most likely going to change it's marketing strategy to focus on the increased coverage as opposed to the ch...

JUST BRING IT...

T-MOBILE has slaughtered the competition in 2 rounds so far...
T-Mobile has ponied up the most money so far. Hopefully they can deliver the knockout punch before the day is over. This would definitely restore confidence with some who lost faith with the company. ๐Ÿ™‚
