Wherify Finds Sales Partner At Toys "R" Us

Wherify handsets will finally make their way onto US shelves on October 1. Toys "R" Us stores will sell the company's Wherifone for $100 and will offer service starting at $20 per month. Wherify's plans include both voice time as well as location services. The Wherifone simplifies calling by only having buttons for four outgoing numbers in addition to 911. Incoming calls can also be restricted to pre-programmed numbers. Wherify's main draw is built in GPS location that allows a parent to quickly locate the handset using a web interface. Because it has not been picked up by Cingular or T-Mobile, the phones will be sold on PetroCom's network. PetroCom is an MVNO that buys network time to provide communications for oil rigs.

I'd expect coverage to be mostly Cingular with some regionals, as unless something has changed recently, T-Mobile doesn't have a roaming agreement with PetroCom.

As for T-Mobile: once again they're missing the boat. T-Mo's kidConnect is a good *rate plan*, but if they want to compete more effectively with VZW, Sprint, Disney, etc. they need to add the location component to their offering, and AIUI, they can't really do (non-911) location easily on their current network and need a handset solution. (My understanding is that Cingular might have...
