Verizon Wireless Testing IMS for Voice Over LTE
Feb 18, 2010, 11:53 AM by Philip Berne
Verizon Wireless, a former interloper at the GSM Association’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, has announced that it has installed IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology that it will use on its upcoming LTE network, according to Fierce Wireless. Unlike existing networks, LTE will not have a separate voice component, so compatibility between the various networks’ methods for sending calls over the future network technology had been a concern. To support the IMS technology, which is growing in popularity among LTE operators, Verizon Wireless is currently testing the tech on its existing 3G network. This is in addition to Verizon Wireless plans to allow Skype calling over its data networks in the near future. Of note, Verizon Wireless has also made clear that its CDMA 1xRTT network will still support voice traffic for at least another 10 years.
