Today the Federal Communications Commission shared its latest idea to help curtail what it calls a "looming spectrum crisis." In an attempt to gather 500MHz more spectrum for wireless broadband use, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski proposed that current spectrum holders (i.e., television broadcasters) be allowed to voluntarily donate their spectrum back to the FCC for auctioning. Existing spectrum holders would then be party to some of the proceeds raised by a new spectrum auction. Genachowski said, "The Mobile Future Auction would allow broadcasters to elect to participate in a mechanism that could save costs for broadcasters while also being a major part of the solution to one of our country's most significant challenges." The FCC is due to submit a new broadband plan to Congress in March, and believes recovering spectrum for wireless broadband use is a critical component of its plan.
