Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski has asked the other members of the FCC to approve AT&T's acquisition of rural wireless licenses from Verizon Wireless. The asset swap was first mandated by the FCC in 2008, when the FCC agreed to allow Verizon Wireless to acquire Alltel. AT&T and Verizon Wireless proposed that AT&T acquire a specific set of wireless licenses that cover portions of 18 states across the middle of the country back in May 2009. According to the Wall Street Journal, the asset swap has taken a back seat to other issues facing the FCC. The vote is to take place within the next few weeks.
