Poll Results At Odds Over FM Radio Mandate
Sep 28, 2010, 2:35 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Separate polls conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) over a planned mandate to include FM radios in all mobile devices show vastly different results. The NAB poll claims that 76% of cell phone owners would pay a one-time fee of 30 cents to have an FM radio included in their phone, and 66% of adults say they would use an FM radio if their phone had one. According to the CEA, however, "most users" are not interested in having an FM radio in the phone. The CEA's poll shows that 80% of respondents don't support a government mandate to include FM radios, and 75% of respondents said that the design of mobile devices should be left to the manufacturers, and not the government. The NAB and RIAA recently proposed that all mobile devices be mandated to include an FM radio tuner in order to settle a royalty dispute between the two organizations. The CEA, CTIA and other organizations strongly oppose the NAB and RIAA's proposal.
