Broadcom Debuts NFC Chip and Dual-Core Processor

Broadcom today announced two new components for mobile devices.
- BCM20203 - This new near-field communications chip for is targeted at consumer devices. The BCM20203 is an ultra low-power chip, and doesn't need to draw power from the device's battery. Instead, it is activated by the NFC reader at the point of sale. Broadcom says the chip also has memory, so it can support local data storage. Broadcom believes the chip will be ideal for devices such as mobile phones, tablets, Bluetooth headsets, and more. The BCM20203 is already sampling.
- BCM2157 - This new chip is a baseband processor meant for Android smartphones. According to Broadcom, it supports two 500MHz ARM processor cores and HSDPA at 7.2Mbps. The chip can provide the oomph needed for HVGA displays, 5 megapixel cameras, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC radios. It can also support mobile hotspot features. The BCM2157 is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2011.
