A group of leading mobile companies today announced an initiative to create a new top-level domain (TLD) on the Internet. The "mobile TLD" would be used for Internet sites optimized for mobile usage, as an alternative to existing TLDs such as ".com", ".org", ".info", and ".uk". The proposed TLD itself has not been announced. The new TLD must be approved by the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). If approved, the companies involved have agreed to form a new joint venture to manage the mobile TLD. The participating companies are Microsoft Corp., Nokia, Vodafone, 3, GSM Association, HP, Orange, Samsung, and Sun.
