Carriers Want the Gov to Clear All Spectrum Below 3GHz

The CTIA wireless association and a handful of the country's largest wireless network providers have sent a letter to President Obama asking that he have the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) clear the government's unused and underused paired and internationally-harmonized spectrum bands below 3GHz. The NITA oversees the U.S.'s spectrum assets. The letter was signed by the CEOs of AT&T, Cellcom, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. They believe the move is necessary in order to free up the spectrum needed to meet the growing demand for wireless broadband services. The carriers would then buy the spectrum from the government at auction, which the CTIA says will raise billions of dollars in proceeds for the U.S. government.
