New Attack on LightSquared Says it Degrades Hurricane Tracking
Sep 8, 2011, 8:35 AM by Eric M. Zeman
Representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Transportation Department, and a federal advisory body all told Congress on Wednesday that LightSquared's planned Long Term Evolution 4G network needs further testing because it can degrade the accuracy and ability of the government to track hurricanes and other storms. The agencies all told Congress that the high-precision receivers and the satellites used to track storms suffered failures during tests of LightSquared's network. LightSquared maintains that it can circumvent the interference issues, but the GPS industry and a number of government groups disagree. LightSquared is still seeking final approval from the Federal Communications Commission on its network, which will use L-band spectrum to make LTE 4G mobile broadband available across most of the country.
