Question about new phones

Ok, I'm thinking of switching to Sprint from Cingular (because of discount through work) and I've been asking my friends with Sprint what their opinion is and how their pricing and upgrades work. Some things just throw me off and I'll even call in to verify (not being able to change the plan unless your contract is up, for example). Both times I've called in, the rep wasn't too pleasent and confused me even more (monthly rate is $10 extra if I'm not under contract).

Here's the new confusion. My friend is under contract and is having problems with her phone. I suggested going on ebay or buying one at full price from Sprint. She said that different people have told her that Sprint will allow her to get another line on her account to ...

yes your friend can get another line and possibly get a free phone. She will have to of course pay the monthly cost for having the additional line and she should wait about 30 days or so before she tries to swap the equipment/trade.

Your friend should just pay for the phone and save the hassle of the second line, it's contract, and fees.

Ohh, ok, I see on the site where if you have a F&C plan, you can add one phone for $0/month. That's probably what they're talking about. Doing so would add a 2 year contract, right? That's not too bad of a deal, then, I guess, especially if she has no plans on switching. That's weird how Sprint would offer such a plan. To me, it seems like they're allowing people to upgrade early. It'd be kind of nice, though, if GSM carriers offered that. You could get 2 different phones, one for work, one for play, all for free. Then just switch out the SIM and keep the same number for both. Usually, from what I've seen, when companies offer the 2nd line free, it's on dedicated family plans, not on any regular plan.

When you're off contract with sprint, do you have to pay $10 more a month? That's what I was told my a rep (rude, might I add) when I called in asking some questions about them.

you can get around that. new customer, you have to pay that fee. If you are a existing customer and your contract runs out, you can still continue service without renewing on sme plan but if you were to try an change plan after contract expire, they would request you to renew or pay the 10 a month to be off contract. Some promo plans or new plans require a contract, like fair and flex plans.

That's odd. So, either I pay full price for a phone AND $10.00 extra a month on my plan or I sign a 2 yr. contract, get a discounted phone, and save the $10? Is Sprint the only company that does this?

i read that you were thinking of changing while i was reading cingulars board...let me tell you some things to think about...

is your 23% off worth the inadequate, rude, incompetent customer service?

is your 23% off worth having your account possible messed up for a few billing cycles because as a rep, i hardly ever seen anyone apply a company discount accurately. I worked in the business accounts and 80% off company discounts i saw were not applied correctly or not applied at all.

I've been with sprint for years, have a 23% discount, worked for them....i also could get free service with another carrier but have no plans to change....i'm lazy and to be honest, despite the issues, i love sprint . I've had horrible cs and rarely had...

there's no gaurantee that the phone hasn't been blacklisted (i.e., reported stolen or lost) so there's no gaurantee that you'll be able to activate

alot of sellers on ebay will refuse to provide the esn to potential buyers, 'cuz they could activate it and then no one else could buy it

definately do not buy a used phone ever without checking the esn first

if you try and activate a esn that is lost, stolen, from an account where a banace is owed, or a frodulant account, sprint will not avctivate the esn and you will be left with a paper weight

are you still arguing with me? 'cuz i agree with you - the issue of getting a replacement CDMA phone not being easy or simple is something that needs serious correction...i was just wondering if any1 had an idea how to resolve the issue

what i said was not an argument it was a waring to every one out there. never buy a used phone with out checking the esn. if they will not provide oyu with it to check out then definately do not waist your time.

honestly i only buy my phones new directly from the provider.

if you ask me buying a used phone in the first place is a stupid idea any ways. the industry average life is only 18 months. it is stupid to buy a phone used because chances are it is already atleast a year old and you have who knows how long left in which it will work
