it is a lack of quality alternatives. If you look at T-Mo, for example, they have the HTC G2, the LG G2X, and the HTC Sensation; all 3 of those don't have a counter part on AT&T, plus T-Mo has the Nexus S (7 months earlier) the HD7 (8 months earlier) the Captivate (a year old phone now)...

The point is AT&T is slow to release new, exciting Android devices/iPhone competitors, has a limited selection compared to other carriers (look at Sprint and Verizon's line ups), and so forth...

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next monthish... will they get a Galaxy SII? Will they get a Sensation-esque phone? Will they ever get an Android phone with full keyboard that isn't total crap?

Or, will they continue to just not get p...

I think the choices they've provided for smartphones have been very good for the most part..t-mobile and verizon have saturated the market with all kinds of low and mid range androids and at&t has released way fewer android phones, but most of them have been very very good.

They do offer several good choices... but only 3, really... The Infuse, the Atrix and the Inspire. But all 3 of those are behind the curve compared to everyone else.

If you read the article that started this, you would see that IS the point. The average rating of AT&T's non-iPhone smartphones is lower than their competitors by half a point. Why? Not for lack of total choices (AT&T has more choices than T-Mobile actually) rather a lack of good choices.

It is their lack of other smartphones that compete with the iPhone, let alone compete with other carriers line ups. There really is no denying that while they have some good choices, they have fewer than their competitors, and they have nothing on par with their competitors top tier....

I agree with you for the most part. To be fair though, the Infuse is not a captivate with a bigger screen. It's capable of HSPA+ 21 whereas the captivate is HSPA 7.2, and it has better battery life and a faster processor (200mhz faster) than the captivate.

lmao was that phone not recalled due to issues? I remember the commercials when it first launched then i rememeber them recalling the phone or just having many issue's and the commercials stopped. Now the phones fixed and the commercials are running again.

Say what you will about Verizon having mid range and low end Android smartphones. People like them. They don't have to spend $200+ for the feeling of having everything at their fingertips. Most people don't require the top end and shouldn't have to pay the price to have something they have no use for. The Ally was popular for being mid-range. Not too much to handle for your average user. The Citrus is a free, low end smartphone. While not as popular as the mid-ranges (or top end for that matter) they offer some kind of option. We have the iPhone (much to my dismay) but if you prefer something that isn't as glorified (and disappointing) but want something that you can feel connected with, why not. /end rant

All I was really saying was they tried too hard to saturate the market. They definitely have AT&T beat when it comes to midrange choices, but there's a lot of phones they shoulda just passed on imo.

Lets be honest though, out of the box, the iPhone is a midrange phone. So what att really lacks is any true high end competitive choices. My comment was less of an attack on your statement and more a rebuttal. There are a couple that are not true smartphones that I would whole heartedly agree with your statement though.

😳 Wow! That statement is so far off the mark! Out of the box the iPhone is one of the best phones, and without a doubt part of that is being a top tier device. Nicest screen, most accurate touch input, well developed OS with a very good UI (if old/stale, still very good)... the iPhone4 exudes quality and expensive.

If you are going to compare a year old phone to phones less than a couple month's old, and act like it isn't top tier because it doesn't have a dual core processor, you got issues and don't understand what top tier is, or have an insanely high standard that includes nothing.

BTW, when the iPhone 4 came out, it was the fastest CPU/GPU combo in the cell phone world, and held that title until Tegra2 chips hit. And assuming the iPhone 5 gets the same dual core the iPad 2 got, it will once again be the fastest CPU/GPU chip combo in the world until something quad core chip set comes out down 6 months later.

the iPhone is not necessarily a midrange smartphone, depending on how you look at it. The iPhone 4 was a very very high end smartphone when it first came out, as was the 3GS. At this point the 3GS has definitely become a midrange smartphone, and that's how it's being marketed. I'm sure as soon as a new iPhone comes out, they will take a similar approach with the current iPhone 4.
