When its just yourself working at a kiosk are you allowed to step out?
After losing two pink razrs and a nokia 6102 due to the cabinet not being locked while an employeee was taking a quick bathroom break, I'm stuck here when I'm working by myself...
Got caught stepping out one time and got written up and warned there wouldn't be a 2nd or 3rd strike even though I keep every thing locked!!
The reasoning is we should never be doing more than 3 hours of single coverage, however the boss forgot about Sundays (which is 6 hours of sitting in the kiosk without so much as a smoke break).
What are my fellow mall rats rules when it comes to stepping out?

You should just call security and make sure nobody steals anything while you go smoke.

What?? What if you have to use the restroom? Are you just supposed to urinate in the trash can?

Obviously we aren't allowed to leave for extended periods of time, or to go peruse the mall. But if I have to use the restroom or grab a quick bite to eat, I'm totally allowed to lock everything up and make a quick trip.

My concern is that customers will get angry if they stop by with a question or problem, and see the kiosk unattended. So before I leave I type up a sign that says "Back in 10 minutes. Free earbud with activation to anyone who mentions this sign." That way if they were thinking about signing up or upgrading, they'll be sure to come back to me so they can get their free headset. Little do they know, that headset onl...

Jenn's thinking, great idea.

I don't work in a kiosk. I suggest to ask your manager for a tarp that you can cover the kiosk when you need to unrinate or defecate. Also ask for a portable toiled. Keep a straight face &, when they ask if you're joking, act extremely offended & mutter something about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Arizona has no break times that are mandatory. we're required to OFFER a 30 minute lunch break for people working an 8 hour shift. otherwise, you're screwed.

Ours is with a 7.5 hour - (anything less than 10 hours) you get a 30 min paid or unpaid(employers choice) "lunch" and 2, 15 min paid breaks. May not be longer than it's either 3 or 3 and a half hours between streaches.

we only have 2 employees. we work all day shifts 11-12 hours, 3-4 days a week. sunday is only 5 hours though. we get 2 - 15 min. breaks and an hour for lunch. we just lock everything up and put up a sign saying when we'll be back. some people are angry when they come up 5 min. after we leave but that's too bad. some are angry because they are too stupid to see the big sign. also too bad. people gotta eat. granted, i rarely use the full hour, but sometimes i do.

Either way they legally have to give you a half hour break. So too bad for them if you need to lock up and leave. Tell them to talk to the better business bereau!
Anytime I've had a problem getting my break and ANY job I just bring up the legalities.
Anyways, we have people on camera watching our stand everything we leave. Works great, even though they can't do much if someone DOES take something, so of course we lock up.

Iowa has no requirement on breaks, they can legally work a employee up to 24 hours without a break which is bull.

I get a 30 minutes lunch break for 10 hours. I put a sign for 45 minutes and customers are always happy when I'm back early. 🙂
