Verizon Pushing Maintenance Update to Sony Xperia Play
Verizon Wireless is offering a system update to the Sony Xperia Play gaming Android smartphone. The update adds continuous auto-focus when shooting 720p HD video, improves the user experience when loading games, and lets owners use the right trigger button as a camera/shutter control. Other benefits of the update include the addition of VZ Navigator, the Wireless Emergency Alerting System, and Verizon Video-on-Demand; fast-forward and rewind Bluetooth controls for the music player; the ability to turn off the mobile hotspot ID broadcast; and numerous big fixes.
Sony Says Some ICS Updates Beginning in Mid-April
Sony today indicated via its web site that it will push the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Xperia arc S, neo V, and ray starting in mid-April. The update will be distributed over the course of four to six weeks. Sony said the next batch of updates, slated for the Xperia arc, PLAY, neo, mini, mini pro, pro, and active, will commence in late May or early June. The update will only be available for download and installation via Windows or Mac computers, and won't be pushed out over the air. Sony won't deliver Android 4.0 to the Xperia S line of devices until the latter part of the second quarter.
Apple, HTC, LG, RIM, Samsung Targeted by Patent Suit
A company called Graphics Properties Holdings recently filed a lawsuit against Apple, HTC, LG, RIM, Samsung, and Sony, alleging that the companies' products violate its intellectual property. Specifically, the lawsuit covers a patent pertaining to how mobile devices process data and text into pixels on a display. The lawsuit names the Apple iPhone, HTC EVO 4G, LG Thrill, RIM BlackBerry Torch, Samsung Galaxy S/S II, and Sony Xperia Play as violating the patent. Graphics Properties, which has already sued some of these same companies under a different name, is seeking damages and royalty agreements.
C Spire Wireless Wins Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for $49
C Spire Wireless today announced the launch of Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play gaming smartphone. The Xperia Play is available immediately through most C Spire retail channels for $49.99 after rebate with a new two-year agreement.
Sony to Update All 2011 Xperia Phones to Android 4.0
Sony Ericsson today announced on its blog that it will update its entire line-up of Xperia-branded Android smartphones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This includes the Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia Play, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, and Xperia ray. Sony Ericsson said that it is working to merge the features of its Xperia software with those of Android 4.0, and will have more information on the availability of the system updates at a later time.
Verizon Xperia Play Won't Have Xperia Interface
Verizon Wireless demo'd its upcoming Xperia Play gaming phone at CTIA this week, revealing that it won't come with any of Sony Ericsson's unique interface software. Rather, it will come with a plain Android 2.3 interface.
