I am not sure but I have a 2GB in mine and it works fine. With the limitations of the phone anything larger than 2 or 4 GB is pretty much a waste anyway.
-Java apps you can only really have installed to the phone itself. It will only store on the SD card uninstalled and unusable.
-Camera pictures and videos use little amounts of space.
-Mp3 player slows down tremendously the more music you have loaded and battery life sucks dry with continuous use.
