how to select text with smartphones

I'm considering the BJ but it looks like so far in my research that with smartphones you don't get the touchscreen and without that you can't select text in whatever application. Does anyone know if this is true or can you select text? Thanks

i am not 100% sure about this but I know with Blackberry, you hold down control and use the jog wheel to select the text...so im pretty sure there is something similar to this with the bj.

thanks. i think at this point though ive decided i need a pda phone to be able to edit docs.
