Curious about how it knows when it is in the holster
I've been using my 8830 for three days now,and I love it!!!! Best phone I ever owned.
I am curious though... There is an option to have the phone keypad automatically lock when the phone is inserted into the holster. Does anyone know how the phone knows it is in the holster and when it is not?

I'm wondering the same thing. I have the 8703, and have the same option. I was looking at it, and the only explanation I could come up with was that the holster slightly squeezes the phone on the sides. And, then the BB can sense the "squeeze" and realizes it's holstered.
Am I crazy?

There's a magnet on the pouch that turns of the device when its close to it!

Oh wow I didn't even consider that. That's cool.

I carry a Nextel 7100i (previously carried a Nextel 7510 and 7520), and although the holsters may operate differently, there is a small magnet on mine. I asked myself this same question when I carried the 7520, and I noticed that there was a small metal circle underneath the belt clip, so i decided to run a few tests. Paperclips, staples, small screws all stuck to it without a problem, and I thought about trying to trick my Blackberry into thinking it was in a holster with something like a refrigerator magnet, but if I were to use too strong of a magnet, in the wrong part of the phone, well it just didn't seem worth the risk ;)
Grab a small screw or staple, and wave it around the holster, you will probably find a magnet.

I also suspect it is the magnet, but haven't tried to prove it yet either. I can tell my Blackberry is magnetized, because a paperclip stuck to it today.

There is a little magnet in the holster along with the phone and when they meet up the blackberry locks. A great idea on RIM's part if I do say so myself.
