Can you use this phone as a "regular" cell phone? (sans data plan and global service plan?)

I am really liking what I've learned about Blackberrys thus far, and I'm wondering if I can buy this one as my NE2 phone, without getting a data plan or anything else.

I know this sounds pointless to most people, but I love the software, the qwerty keypad, and most importantly, the excellent voice quality. I do not need "push" e-mail technology (yet..) nor do I need to surf the internet on my cell phone, let alone HIGH-SPEED internet. Not something I need. Just text messaging, organizing, and calling mostly.

Does the voice quality differ if you opt out of the data plan? Am I confused here?

Hopefully someone here knows the answers to my questions, or I may have to wait for the release at the stores on the 28th. (Open on Memorial...

From what I understand, if you don't have a blackberry plan, you can't receive any type of data. Not even text messages. So I've been told.

Dude, why in the world would you attempt to get a RIM device without the data plan? all RIM devices are email work-horses therefore almost useless w/o it.
If all you want is web browsing and text, get the U740 Samsung or the 9900 LG ENVY and save on the data plan; $15 for VCAST which will give you unlimited web browsing and $10 for Inlimited In Messaging, both of these have a qwerty keyboard.....or get the 8830, pay $25 a month for just 10MB and no TXT

You can't have a blackberry with a data plan. Also, say if you get a Motorola Q and block data, you can still recieve text messages.

You can do a pay as you go data plan...which would result in data charges everytime you send or receive picture messages.

when you first activate it, verizon requires a blackberry plan...however, there is nothing keeping you from taking it off.

This product must have a data plan "PERIOD" ! remember this is a push product. There is no such thing with this device as with some of the other products Verizon will allow per KB basis. This product is the ultimate e-mail solution why bother thank you.

False, false, false....pay as you go is absolutely possible. You have to activate with the data plan and then call in to activations and they will take it off.

Actually what you have just said is false. I had a woman come into my store the other day who tried to do EXACTLY what you just suggested. After trying unsuccesfully several times to do complete the transaction through EROES, I had to call Customer Care. CC said the exact same thing that the person above you said. All BLACKBERRY devices HAVE to have a data plan. You can not pay per kb.

You will be required to get a data plan of at least 10MB for $24.99 with a voice plan. For what you are looking for go with a PDA/SmartPhone as you can take off the data package and block it or go with pay per k/b .015 per k/b. If you want a BlackBerry still, plan on having a data package.

I like the voice quality of this phone, as well as the scheduler and keyboard. I don't need it for anything other than making phone calls and sending text messages. I am surprised that you wouldn't be able to use the 8830 on a voice-only plan with text message capability in tact.

I need to hear it from the reps before I concede to this.

The billing system does not allow BB devices to be activted on the network without some kind of data plan. If you want something with internet and text with full QWERTY, get a 740 or an ENV. It amazes me when people want a BB but do not want what it was primarily made for. It's an e-mail machine. If you don't want that, then get something else. I swear, it's like buying a Ferrari, and walking to work. What's the point?

Hey prtyboyd,

blackberries are great stable phones. Thats why people want them. I would buy one and not use email. I have a treo 650 and I dont ever use data, but this phone has become an integral part of my life in Sales. Not everyone NEEDS email...some people just want a stable smart phone , good reception, and easy texting.

And an env is NOT a business phone, blackberries are. I would never trade my 650 for an EnV...no F'n way!

If you could buy a BB without the data plan, I would buy one tommorow.

The reason you need a data package is because Blackberries are constantly communicating with email servers to get your emails, so the data is sort of always on.

With a treo, or Moto Q...you decide when to use data, so a data package is not required. I use a treo with no data. Its great, and thats prolly the route you will have to go if you want a smartphone without paying for data.

Oh, and once you go qwerty, you wont go back..lol

On Verizon, With Any Blackberry you MUST have a Data plan, $24.99 or $44.99 Data Feat or $29.99 or $49.99 Data Plan/No Voice. Data Block or Pay As You Go is NOT an options as it would violate Verizon's and Blackberry's Agreement. If you are confused, call Data Tech Support and Not Customer Service.

Any PDA/Palm can have Pay As You Go or Data Blocked.

....that is not true. Just like every other carrier RIM's contract states the Blackberry MUST have data. So no, you cannot have a voice-only Blackberry, not even on Sprint.
