Sprint

Will a Sprint 8830 work on VZW's network.

For example, if I buy the phone from Sprint full retail, can I activate it on Verizon's network?

If yes, will VZW's crippling still be there? What has been crippled on the 8830?

Has anyone done/tried this?

Thanks, Mike

Nope, for the most part you can't use any carriers phone on another carrier. The only way to take it from one carrier to another is buy a T-Mobile or Cingular and get it unlocked, but then you will only be able to use that phone on T-Mobile and Cingular. They are both GSM technology which basically means the service goes to the SIM card instead of the actual phone. The other major carriers (Sprint, Verizon, Amp'd) are all CDMA technolgy and the service goes to each phone which is assigned an ESN (Electronic Serial Number). Each ESN is tied to a specific carrier, plus the software that is installed on a phone is specifically for sprint or verizon.

add suncom to your gsm list for unlockable phones in the us and then add the rest of the world (provided these are quad or tri band phones) to the list of where you can use said unlocked device

I hate to burst your bubble, but I currently have 2 motorola phones (a krzr and a razr) that are set up for US Cellular that are active on Verizon accounts as well... I actually switch the Krzr from Verizon to US Cellular just by changing my network settings, the Razr stays on Verizon full time.

Now a bb on the other hand is a probably a wee bit more complicated than that, I have no clue if that would work, I guess I'll just have to give it a try and see what happens...
