BlackBerry 8830
Clarity on Sound and Call Clarity
Thank you.
It seems like the reports are a little bit too widespread to be one person's imagination. I would like to get this phone but would be quite troubled if I was buying into problems like this. See blackberry forums below:

Has anyone out there experienced this problem and aware of whether or not the diabling of the "auto volume control" makes any difference?
Thank you very much.
When I use a wired headset (I hate Bluetooth) they say I sound as clear if I were on a land line.
I think the Mic sensitivity on the Blackberries is a bit high and there is nothing any software is "probably" going to do about it.
The 8830 could be particularly sensitive as far as I know. I have 2 co-workers with the 8830 and one sounds bad no matter what phone he uses and the other, well - she always sounded VERY clear when she had an old LG flip. Now she is sometimes hard to understand when I speak to her.
The microphone in the older models was hidden under the ...

I've called VZW and RIM and they deny ever hearing of this problem. I could understand it if they deny it is a problem, though I'm troubled that the designated experts in the companies claim that there have been no complaints or reports, particularly given the massive number of threads on the Internet.
I would find it more reassuring if they at least acknowledged the complaints if not the problem.

😉 lol - You are asking a company to acknowledge there is an issue with a phone or product....
That is why people sue companies. Now let's get down to basics: You and I obviously have the ability to discriminate between the various sound quality issues on phones. I h...

I guess I was hoping that VZW would at least acknowledge the Web reports since they are pretty massive. It's an odd complaint re backgound noise, since it's not the 8830 owner's who are hearing it, but rather, the folks that they are talking with. I think that may explain why the complaints are not as widespread as they are.
Do you have any thoughts re what others have suggested re disabling "enhanced audio"? My sense is that doesn't have anything to do with the background noise the person on the other end of the phone is hearing, but one never knows.
I performed my own test to see if disabling "enhanced audio" made any difference. What I did was call my voice mail box at work with the 8830 and made sure I had music playing in the background. I did this with Enhanced audio enabled and then disabled. I then compared the two recordings using the phone on my desk at work. I feel that disabling enhanced audio was the way to go.
There does seem to be an open issue about the mic being overly sensitive, and perhaps disabling enhanced audio helps.
Still, I am really concerned that the 8830 is a patently defective phone, and the failure of RIM and the carriers to openly address the issue is quite troubling.
The latest software update has greatly improved this issue. I have tested the updated phone with different types of background noise and with different people on the other end. All say there is a nice improvement.
The new software version is V4.2.2.176 Platform 3.0.0.76 and was downloaded from the Sprint BB web site.
Hope this helps.
