Major software problem (it's not google this time)

This might be lenghty, but I appreciate anyone who reads it and might have some input...

I am on my 3rd 8830, and this one is broken too. All 3 have had the same problem. Here it is:

When I press the send key to call a phone number, the screen goes black, the red light comes on, and the phone turns off and then comes back on again. After it turns back on it may work normally for a little while, even up to a day, but then without fail the problem strikes again. One time during all of this I got a message that said "device error 248 (or 348, I forgot which)"

On the first 2 handsets I downloaded Google Maps. VZW Tech support thought it could be a problem with this 3rd party application, though they admitted this shouldn't be a problem...

Newbie Questions

This is my first Blackberry and I love it but I have some questions...

1) Sometimes my screen is brighter then at other times. The setting is set to 100% brightness but sometimes I'll look at it and its real bright, then 10 seconds later it dims a little bit. Does anyone know why?

2) When I hold down a speed dial letter, for instance "J", I hear a real quick series of beeps and then it rings the first ring on speakerphone before switching over to the ear piece. Does anyone know why it does this and if its possible to turn off?

3) Whenever I get an email, an idicator shows up for that particular mailbox but also under a folder called messages. So I end up having to look at both. Is there any way for it to not got to the Messag...

Dumb questions But..

I need to ask. I really am wanting a phone for email since I sell stuff on ebay and on craigslist plus make it easy to stay in touch. I have tried the Treos and I tried a Q but I always seem to not like them because they were hard to get set up. Stuff didn't want to work like emails and I was just lost. I am not the Brain like some of you all are on this website. I was thinking about buying into a Blackberry and I wanted some advice on these. How hard are they to use? I need to have them on vib at work just some advice pleae

Treo to BlackBerry

Just wondering, could anyone give me the pros and cons for switch from a treo to a BB? I am a Treo 700p user at the moment and know all the cons of this phone. (Power cycling, locking up, clearing out text and call history on its own, no GPS) I could go on, but I'm sure you all know the story. I get, on average, about 20 - 30 emails a day from work. We use MS Exchange of course. My treo does just fine for the most part, but drags a bit when its retrieving email in the background. Would the BB do this? I never use my camera, so I'm not gonna miss that much. Could I run more than one application at a time? Thanks in advance for the feedback guys.

Google Crippling My Phone?

Had the 8830 for a week, then I downloaded the gmail application and the google maps application. Both worked fine on my phone. The next day, however, my phone would not connect to the browser, and when I opened google maps the screen went black and the light turned red. The phone seemed to turn off and then reset itself. Upon turning back on I tried to make a call and the screen went black again. Later that day I receievd a phone call and the phone begain to work perfectly again (including google maps). Thought it was just a bug. Then the next day the same thing happened. I uninstalled both google apps and reinstalled the BB software from verizon, but, when I tried to make a call after that the screen went black again. Could this stem from ...

Where will this phone work - Asia too?

I know some folks that travel worldwide often, specifically and mainly throughout asia, they currently use Cingular as it's the only American cell company that truly works here and there, but with this phone is there any possibility it would work here in the U.S. and in asia?

Temporary World Access

If someone takes the 8830 and uses it domestically and does NOT select the 69.99 global plan and stays with their traditional Blackberry plan, what happens if you decide to travel to Europe or wherever and want to use the GPRS feature for 2 weeks.

1. How does this affect your plan for Voice?
2. How does this affect your plan for data?
3. Can you do it for a short time such as 2 weeks?

Verizon has crippled the 8830

Before you run out and buy Verizon's Blackberry 8830:

Verizon has crippled the Blackberry 8830 so that the GPS location function will NOT pass data to Google Maps, Spot or anything else. Despite what the phone's own help screens say, GPS "location on" does not work. After hours of being escalated and listening to music, I finally got transferred to Blackberry itself and got the straight answer. Verizon's solution to tracking? "Buy VZNavigator" ($10/month).

Using the 8830 in place of a WWAN card (which I had, and now use again) requires tethering to your PC via a USB cable (provided). Can't do it via Bluetooth. Again, Verizon has turned off that capability. Also, you have to pay an additional $15 per month (on top of the data pla...

Returning 8830

I have tested the 8830 extensively and I am returning my 8830. I like BlackBerry and Verizon; however, this phone is not worth full retail and I am returning to my 8703-e.

If all the features worked as advertised, I would keep the 8830. The phone has issues with Vista, GPS and teathering and I am not willing to talk to technical support any more.

There are features on the 8830 that are clearly exceptional and I am frustrated with my decision. The screen, voice quality, trackwheel, size and overal functionality are exceptional.

I am hopeful that Verizon later comes up with a more consumer version of this phone that looks and feels like the Curve.

No Broadband Service outside of the U.S.

According to Verizon Wireless Website :

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller? ... »

BroadbandAccess Connect capable
(only in the United States)

Too bad, because once again, Verizon is falling short on capturing market share -- they are handing this entire business to T-Mobile and Cingular.

8830 or moto Q

i need a phone that has emial and a good os that i can manage my schedule. im looking at the new BB or the Q. i knwo the q has had a bad rep, but i have read how to fix most of the problems.

i dunno if the bb 8830 is worth the extra $100 since i just dont need the pop email, push is fien by me. but how bad really is the batt life on the Q? i also never had a bb, so im not familiar with their os. and i love the windows os, had the mpx220 and loved it.

anyone else caught inbetween the 8830 and the q like me?

Love the 8830............but

i can't get past this ringer volume, even on high, it's way too low.......my 8700 from t-mobile had a really loud ringer(the low setting on 8700 is the high setting on 8830, now thats bad), and even the 8800s from cingular and t-mobile have much louder ringers then the 8830......Verizon had no clue, so i spent $50 to call RIM, and even they said, wow, it really does ring low.....when you're using this as your only phone, that creates a problem......

I wonder if Sprint's 8830 has the same problem....somehow, I doubt it.

Anyone else having this issue? If you play the ringers from the media section, they play loud, but once set as ringtone, forget it......too low
