Hi,

I am looking to buy the tilt, but I do NOTwant to buy a data plan. Will I still have a lot of options using the phone without buying a data plan or using ATT's wareless internet? If I buy/download a third party's navigation software... will that not access the ATT data network... or will it need to access it and will I be charged on a per kilobyte basis. ATT said that I would need a data plan so I am not charged for the GPS accessing the ATT internet (which it will HAVE TO DO), but I have read many reviews taht said that the third party softwares on the tilt work independently from the ATT data/internet. If I have the ATT data/internet blocked, will I be able to use any third party navigation software. I want to use some of the ph...

In all honesty, there's not much point in getting a phone like the Tilt if you're not going to get a data plan. These phones are made to be mobile networking platforms, and that pretty much requires an internet connection.

You can get by... sort of... by just using wireless hot spots but it will really limit the device's usefulness.

Read the thread "GPS withOUT $10 monthly fee or data plan" for more information on using GPS without a data plan.

Thank you... if I get the tilt without I data plan... I can still listen to my MP3's, use the video and camera, use the speakerphone and bluetooth, and check my email and go online when I am in a buliding with wifi? Is the only disadvantage that I cannot do this on the go / while traveling? If I dont want to risk running up my bill... would you recommened having my internet blocked? This phone really seems like a good one... I just don't want to be stuck paying 40 a month for the internet or be charged for per-kilobyte usage....

Thanks!

You can easily do all of that stuff (except the email via wi-fi) with a far less expensive phone, too. The real advantage of the Tilt is that it can do all of that stuff over a high speed 3G network.

At any rate, you can disable the data connection from the phone if you want to. There's a utility called Wireless Manager that lets you turn on (or off) each of the phone's capabilities separately. I used it while traveling in Europe to turn off the data connection so that I wouldn't get charged for data while roaming.

So you could get the Tilt with no data plan and then disable it from the phone so that it couldn't access the network. You'd still have to be careful, though, to make sure that you never accidentally turned the data conn...

You can have them disable data, not sure of they will sell the phone that way, or you can access your account online and disable it yourself.

If they won't sell it w/o a data plan, just take it for a month, log onto your account and disable it. Its moot in anycase, because, the rebate requires it, so as I said, take the 40 bux for a month, or a limited plan for less, get your 100 bux rebate and then block it yourself.

But as someone said earlier, this and similar phones are limited without it.
