Is it possible to get the pearl with just a voice plan and no data? The verizon reps say that its impossible but i find that very hard to believe.
...
Nope he is right.
All BB have to have a data plan because all BB have to be able to sync with BB servers, its partly the reason why BB are such a secure/efficient device
...
Then why does t-mobile offer the pearl with no data plan?
...
Because tmobile doesnt have an advance data network (3g).
They use wifi hotspots so its different, mean that tmobile BB cannot stay connected at high speeds at all times. Thats what a BB rep told me which sound logistical.
Also I believe its a contract between BB and VZW. But may i ask why do you want a BB with out email or internet, pretty much thats the main reason to get one. If you are wanting a PDA phone presonally I wouldnt recommend a BB for a calander/daytimer. I would go with the new Samsung i760 with touch screen and built in wifi so can get email/internet for free if you are by a hot spot
...
I want a BB pearl because i like the form factor and UI. I plan on using it to access the web and my e-mail but not so often to require a $30 data plan. The i760 is too bulky and more expensive. I spoke with a sales person inside an authorized verizon retailer (not corporate store) and they said that they can activate a BB with no data plan but i would have to pay full price for the phone. I would rather pay full price than pay an extra $360/year.
...
Well thats shady indirect dealers for you, personally I have only seen a one BB that got activated without data and the guys phone and account got really messed up, (overages and such)
Personally I dont know how a BB would connect without data package. If you go thru indirect make sure they dont change your price plan to Nationwide or you will being alot more than 30 a month for data service.
If you decide to do let me know how it goes, cause i am curious to how it affects the phone and such.
Best of luck to ya!

Maybe some people don't want to use the data aspect of the pearl.....and fyi T-mobile bbs don't use wifi...they use edge....like most Tmob and att phones, including the iphone... Some people just want the ui, style, and organization functions....
...
It is not an option and don't bother with the Pearl unless your looking for a killer e-mail push using the BIS . And plus it's the first Pearl @ 3G . Go get another toy !

Keep in mind that if you use data without a plan it's 1.5 cents per kilobyte. Doesn't sound like much, but the first month I got my Audiovox 6600 a few years ago,I checked my Yahoo email twice on it at the per kb rate, and it cost me $60. I suspect that even at modest use, you'll find yourself spending $30 a month or so.
Also, with Verizon phones with wifi, you still pay the kilobyte rate even if you're in a wifi area. Kind of sucks, but that's the way it is.
...
You don't pay per kilobyte when you're using wifi! People start talking before they know what they're talking about. I have a 6700 that isn't active, i still go on wifi. You don't get charged for it.

You may be able to activate it without a data plan but as I understand it expect your monthly bill to be in the hundreds of dollars. Just because you don't have a plan doesn't mean it won't still sync constantly and instead of a plan you will now be paying for that on an acess basis.
...
Sync constantly with what? if i don't set up the device to sync with my e-mail service then why would it be accessing the web? My brother has a Pearl with t-mobile with no data plan and he is not getting any unexpected charges. I will keep you guys up to date if/when i get my pearl with no data plan. 🙂
...
blackberry devices will not set up on vzw without a data plan. i won't pretend i know why, but they won't. after one is set up you can add the 1x block feature but most reps won't do it for you. this feature will also block your mms messaging in addition to email and web.
...
Blackberry phone and no data plan? No sir, it won't happen. If it does, it is someone not doing their job properly. I just don't understand why people pay a lot for phones and don't use the phone to its full capacity. I think you need to look into a regular phone and just use the calendar feature. $24.99 for 10mb/month is the cheapest Blackberry data plan.
Sidenote: This (not you particulary but you brought up the issue) is what bothers me about customers. Will continue to ask and call "I want to activate this phone but no data plan." "Sorry, you unfortunately cannot do that." Then they bitch and complain. You are being provided a service(You as in general, not the poster) and if you don't like the result, then don't use it or the phone t...

What's the point? I hear this all the time from people wanting PDA/smartphones/BlackBerrys -- but don't want to pay for the data plan. That's the whole point of having the device... Otherwise just get a RAZR or that EnV thing with a keyboard.
...
As mentioned in some of the threads. The BB uses the BIS and a push and must have data pln. However a cnmsr can just do a data pln and not the voice @34.99 not the opposite.....
...
The rep is correct. I just went through the process.
...
The reason I want the BB is because of it's size and I like the non-flip. I just got the i760 and it is way too bulky and I do not think it is user friendly. I want a phone I can grab and make a call quickly. Not possible with the i760. Every time I push the send button my slide opens! So, is there no way to get a BB without an expensive plan? I am currently on a regular share plan. What is the minimum plan I need to use the BB without extra "as you go" charges?
...
I believe that to activate the phone you have to have a data plan. You can always cancel the data portion of the plan after the first month. A Verizon rep told me that if I did that I would need to activate another phone because the Blackberry would not work without a data plan. My sister-in-law has AT&T and she did what I just mentioned and her phone still works. Just be careful not to use any data without a data plan unless you want a huge bill!!
...
Alright just for a refernce here people. Without the data plan on the blackberrys you will not have access to the data portions of your phone, they will just not be there.
