Well, I visited my local store today to go in and get the Bold which I have anxiously been waiting for since it was first mentioned on Blackberry.com. The $299 price, I felt was little steep, but I was willing to pay as I am an avid blackberry fan. I have upgraded many times on my plan a few months before my actual renewal date. The in store rep would usually just wave off the few months I had left and upgrade me. So, same scenario, I head into ATT to get my phone.
Strike One- The phone is $399 with a mail in rebate not $299-even though a rep in store told me on the phone to bring $299 plus tax to get my phone.
Strike Two- I'm told ATT has nixed the ability for reps to sell phones at discounted price prior to upgrade date.

If you have a Premier Account with AT&T, you might want to call and see if they will upgrade you sooner, they seem to be able to do things. And if not, if you have a fairly expensive plan, calling 611 and seeing if CS will give you an upgrade is worth a shot.
Someone I know who works in a corp store told them no longer as you say can get you early upgrades. Even if its a few days. But CS can if they so wish. I guess it comes down to how high you rate with them. Many times if you are upgrading a service, i.e. dumb phone plan to a smartphone or blackberry plan AT&T as well as other carriers will offer an earlier upgrade, mainly its in their economic interest to do so.

Do you get a discount because of your employer? If so you usually are under Business Services i.e. Premier. Outside of perks like that and discounts, the true benefit is much faster and better customer service.

The sales rep that allowed you to upgrade before your eligibility date was not supposed to do it. They have not "nixxed" the ability since it was never there, it was just a rep making an exception for you. The store is not compensated if they upgrade you earlier than you are actually eligible. I have seen people lose their jobs because of that. If you remember when the iPhone came out originally it was $600 and nobody complained. Either you could afford it so you got it or you couldn't afford it so you waited. In this case the phone is $399 which is the same price the Blackberry Curve 8300 was when it frist came out and as it got more popular the phone manufacturing price came down and so did the overall price. Then again, if you can wait, and I understand saving a few hundred bux in this economy is nothing to ignore, you may just want to wait the few months.
Originally I was going to buy it strait out contract free, but the cost past rebate for me was significantly more then the etf if by chance I quit early. And even more so that they take off $5.00 per month on the etf. Actually the phone even before rebate was cheaper then paying an etc of $175.00 because of the few bux they took off from Premier.

I understand all that. And the GPS, although a nice plus, is not what has sold me on the phone. I was one of the ones who bought the Curve when it first came out and I paid the $399, got my rebate, and sold my pearl to someone else for $150, so I could justify spending that much. At the time they upgraded me, I was a good 5 months from the end of my contract. The $399 price tag with rebate, I can swallow, but to have to pay a little over $500 AND sign off on another 2 year agreement is just too much-especially when I can buy it without the contract for $549.

If you are within 30 days of your "upgrade eligibility" date (not the same as your contract end date) you can call into CC and with manager notation can approve you for an early "standard" upgrade.
If you have completed 6 months of your contract you can do an "exception upgrade," which is essentially the standard upgrade plus $75.

Nope, I'm about 80 days from my upgrade date. I even considered switching to Verizon next week since they're launching the storm for $199, but hated the thought of being locked down to the same phone for 2 years, since I usually want a new phone every 6 months. đ
However, since my contract is up in February, I absolutely could not wait till then to get my Bold, I added a line to my account to get the discounted rate and bumped my other line down to the bare bones-$9.99 month and will just let that line ride it out until February when I can cancel it.
