i hear the new Storm 2 will have WiFi. Question...and forgive me if i sound dumb cuz i'm new to all this smartphone stuff.....

If you have WiFi on your phone is there a need to have a data plan from your carrier? WiFi is free right? So i would just need to open up browser and go if i have a WiFi signal right? If so, why have a data plan? And would my carrier still somehow bill me for going on internet if i use WiFi? Please help me understand. Thanks 🙂

Technically yes you don't need your data plan but unfortunitally I believe T-Mobile is the only provider now a days that doesn't require a data plan with a Blackberry or any Smartphone. The other carriers wont let you activate your phone and even let you buy one unless you buy there data plan!

Is WiFi faster svc than Verizons Data Service? Is WiFi everywhere or at least better coverage than Verizons coverage?

WiFi is just wireless internet, you have to be near a wireless router that has cable or dsl steaming through it. So technically no its not better because atleast in the middle of nowhere when you have Verizon service WiFi wont work because there is no wireless router right around you! 🤣

Oh ok, so when the Storm 2 comes out...and it has WiFi, and they make me get a data plan...i'm pretty much covered everywhere. Now is WiFi faster than VZ service? What i'm gettin at is this. If i have a WiFi signal and i have VZ signal which is better to use for faster internet service??

Technically, Wifi is faster. But if all you're doing is looking up something, when you take into account the time it takes to connect to the Wifi signal and add it to the download time, the EVDO signal is likely to be faster. If you are doing large downloads, however, the Wifi signal will be faster. Unless you're watching streaming video or some such thing on your small phone screen, I do not see this as a likely use on a cellphone.

Included with the data plan is the incredible email client services which enable emails to get to your phone almost as fast as they navigate to your desk top. Wifi will not accomplish this. That email feature is dominant in the Storm as opposed to an Iphone, for example.

So, losing the data plan would negate the phone's premier feature. It will not become an issue, however. Verizon will not play ball with a lower priced trade off because of WiFi. If you want a data plan, you'll have to pay for it. Included in your check will be $45.00 per month.

Because with WiFi, I can be on a ship in the middle of the ocean, or out of the USA in a country where my CDMA does not work, and I can grab WiFi, connect to the Internet, and send/receive mail from my Exchange server.

I don't need voice when I am out of the country, but I do need email!
