VZW ANNOUNCES LTE LAUNCH

Verizon Wireless will launch its LTE network on December 5 in 38 markets, covering 60 major airports and 110 million potential customers. The carrier plans to blanket its entire nationwide 3G coverage area with LTE service by the end of 2013. Initially, the network will be available on two USB modems, the LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290, which will each cost $150. A $50 rebate is available with a 2-year agreement. Data plans will be available at $50 for monthly access with a 5GB cap, or for $80 with a 10GB monthly cap, and users will pay $10 per GB if the cap is exceeded. RIM has to react to the momentum Android has built, not only with VZW but all other carriers, and address the landscape 4.3 screens as well. The 1/2 qwerty portrait designs are "old hat" and generic. To be surpassed by Motorola, which almost went out of business a few years ago, speaks volumes as to how far behind RIM devices have fallen in customer appeal. QNX and a decent-sized Storm will restore some order. The Torch with 6.0 was NOT the answer!

RIM is making big gains around the world. They seem to be doing better and better in other countries. In the US however, Android came after the smartphone market like a bat out of hell 😈
The love an excitement here is iphone and Android for consumers with RIm predicted to lose more market share. I can see that happening in the near term. No way could the demise of RIM be reality like some already think.
I think QNX will be whats needed. I am looking forward to it. My only near term concern with LTE is battery life. RIMs products are known for better battery life in general and LTE may be a challenge.

Everything Verizon is doing now is directed towards the Android platform. They announced an LTE Motorola handset today running Droid. RIM is on the back burner as far as innovation is concerned as it pertains to Verizon. The specs in the rumors will not pan out unless RIM develops an LTE Storm version to complement the mountain of Android devices on their agenda. If QNX is not in the mix, the Storm will continue to be a bowl of steam!
