Siemens SX1
Reviews? Impressions?
It's got some nice specs!
Bluetooth, USB, Symbian, an expansion slot, the obligatory camera, and even a little FM radio.
And best of all, it's pretty small.
But it's got the numbers off to the side in a really goofy way.
Seems like it'd be a pain to use, esp in the dark.
I actually own this phone and I am in the US. I found out about this phone over a year ago from the mobileburn.com website that tracks some of the most bleeding edge phones. When it was announced I really liked the features and was extremely impressed. However, I wasn't quite sold.
Then in May of 2004, they announced a special version that would come in black as a limited edition model. It is the McLaren SX-1, to commemorate their sponsorship of the McLaren Formula One racing team. I'm a huge Formula One fan so I knew I had to have it.
When it finally appeared for sale, it was ridiculously expensive after converting from euros. The McLaren SX-1 was on siemens.de (Germany) website for 650 Euros I think. Work t...

All the ups and downs, and heck, you even threw in some photos!
I've finally decided to get a cell phone like the rest of the world.
Being the kind of person I am, I'm trying to get a device that will give me as many other tools as I can get and pack it into a package I don't mind carrying around.
This SX1 keeps coming up for the reasons you well know
- it has an OS
- it's got Bluetooth and USB for connectivity
- it can use an expansion card
- it has the obligatory camera
- AND, according to the specs I'm seeing here, it's tiny.
- oh yeah, it's got a little FM radio that's an extra piece of built in hardware few phones have.
I've got questions about the Bluetooth and USB features....

O.K., here goes.
Agreed on the size. It isn't "tiny" the way some phones are, but I consider it to be small, definitely to where you COULD put it in your pocket if you wanted to. I've had bad experiences with this on my previous phone. Pocket lint tends to get caught in the connection ports for the charger, usb cable, etc.
On some of your questions, I think you might be asking too much. I'm not a Palm Pilot/Pocket PC expert, but do those even have the capability of having other USB devices plug into them? I don't think so, but I'm not sure. So to answer your question, ...

With my luck, the phone would flip out and it'd then die in the middle the bios flash I did to try to fix it ;-)
As for USB hosting, the Glossary here at Phonescoop mentions that some devices do it and they call it USB OTG (On The Go) sometimes.

I know phones often use Bluetooth devices.
I saw a friend use a Motorola 66?? with a Bluetooth kbd.
I guess phones are often used AS Bluetooth devices too.
I guess.
I've always had rotten luck with anything wireless.
Wireless Nintendo controlers, radio control...

I actually found out about this phonescoop site over Thanksgiving weekend. I went with my brother-in-law to pick up his new Motorola Razr (cool phone, but doesn't do half of what an SX-1 does) and got to talking with the Cingular guy about switching my service. Oddly, the guy didn't seem interested in my phone when I showed it to him. Seemed pre-occupied with his Motorola MPx200 which frankly isn't even in the same league as the SX-1 (moron). Anyway, he told me about phonescoop to check out how many GSM bands my phone suppor...

How do you like where they put the number keys?
Looks like they did it just to be cute and "different" and it kinda looks like a pain in the arse.
Is there actually some functionality gain by putting them on the side of the phone?
Is it annoying?
I don't think it was a gimick actually. If they had put a normal keypad at the bottom, either the buttons would be tiny and people would complain, or it would add size (length probably) to the phone to fit the keypad. So by putting them on the sides of the screen, you still get fairly large buttons to push that you don't need tweezers for, and you just have to get over the slight inconvenience of it. Believe me, if you have a full address book/contacts list and go ther...

Just like you, I love the SX-1 McLaren since the very first day I saw it and you made me become more interested about it, I had never thought it'd be soooooooo cool and have so many features, unluckily I live in Mexico and lots of stuff don't make it in here so got some questions for you.
First: how did u get it from the UK since by now it's only available in Germany?, I'd love to get one and all the help u could provide on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
Second: do you know if the SX-1 is DUN (Dial-Up Networking) enabled?, that feature let's you use the phone as a modem to connect anything through bluetooth to the internet.
Thank you!
