Motorola Droid X
4G Upgrade?
I think we can all agree that this phone's only real comparable is the EVO, and laying aside the whole question of whether Sprint is REALLY comparable to VZW (I'm not going to get into that flamewar here), it does beg the question of whether the radio hardware is this phone is, or is going to be with a firmware update, capable of 4G once Verizon really starts rolling out LTE?
I think I read somewhere (maybe AndroidCentral) that this phone is NOT going to have LTE, and not going to be upgradeable to LTE, which, if true, really makes me a bit sad. I know it will be months before LTE reaches the closest major market, and years before it reaches where I live, but it would be nice to know the phone is capable if I do venture into an area with...

This was a concern I had as well, until I asked a friend who is a Verizon employee and who is very much up to date on their offerings. He unequivocally said Verizon's 4G network will be in place this year and that the Droid X will definitely support it. Between Verizon's broad coverage and 4G support, it makes it almost a no brainer.
I was thinking of the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint, but given this latest info I plan to get the Droid X.
Oh, the bad news. The Wifi hotspot feature that's available will cost you an extra $40 a month. Something Verizon doesn't widely publicize. They also have a separate Wifi hotspot box similar to the unit Sprint offers, also $40 a month.

Of course, I already have hotspot functionality from my Droid. Without paying extra to verizon. I would expect that it won't be terribly long after release (if not before release) that similar functionality will be available.

Ummm yeah, unless your "friend" works directly with the higher ups in product testing, I doubt he knows anything about the future capabilities of this phone. You should really stop spreading misinformation. BTW the tethering feature for verizon is NOT 40 bucks it will be 20 as stated in the official news conference the day the X was announced.

You know I am not a genius but every time some employee of any company has said something about the future with a product is just thinking of the sales or just blowing out of his butt. Knowing he is your friend I would more like take the information from a technician that is manufacturing the phone.
I could tell someone oh yeah your Moto Droid will upgrade to the LTE no problem you'll just have to plug your phone in and OTW update it... Isn't there a chip that goes into the phone to make this all possible?

Ask your Verizon friend if this phone will be available with dual cameras. That means one on the screen side like the EVO and the iPhone 4 so when LTE is finally up and running, we'll be able to have video calling like the EVO and the iPhone 4

I would check that website that does teardowns. They would spot a 4g antenna right away.
That being said, I don't think it has it. I think this + the samesung (and maybe droid2) will be the last major android phones that are 3g only.
Rumors are there is a Droid Pro in the works.. sounds to me like a name you'd use for 4g.
I won't have 4g near me for a year and a half anyway, and I will only sign a one year contract if I do anything, so I don't mind.
Look at the brightside, Verizon is going to tiered pricing for 4g, so most likely 4g phones will be available only on these tier plans (which could be a benefit, but we don't know what the split up will be, or how they will treat 3g data)

I am pretty sure the Droid X does not have have 4G capability. Also, according to Verizon they will NOT offer unlimited data plan for their LTE (4G) network when it is available. As with AT&T they will charge by the MB.
Considering that Verizon is planning on rolling out their LTE network in 30 markets by yearend I was debating whether to wait it out and purchase a 4G capable phone, but the limited data plan is persuaing me to just go for the Droid X.
