MP3 Ringtones... Yes they can be used...
I have had succeeded in getting an MP3 ringtone to work on my 6100...
I had to reduce its size to 60KB, by converting the 30 second clip to Mono/16/16, and changing the extension to ".mid"... I don't know what the cutoff point is but a 150KB file will NOT work... I will narrow this down later...

Finally got it to work. The app I was using didn't convert down to 16kbps/16,000hz. I tried 32kbps/16,000hz/mono and got the same error about an unrecognized file type when I tried to open the message on my phone.
I switched to an app the could do 16/16/mono and it work!

Here's a cheap and easy way to get MP3 ringtones on your VX 6100:

- Take an MP3 and chop it down to the 30-60 seconds that you want to use as the ring tone. I used a program called Cucusoft All to MP3 MAV Converter to do this. Adobe Audition would work great but it's not shareware.
- Take the partial MP3 and convert it to a low quality file (16 kbps/16,000 hz/mono). It seems these exect settings are required. I also tagged it as copyrighted and original (not sure if this is needed to get it to work). I used a program called dBPowerAmp to do this - Cucusoft doesn't support 16 kbps).
- Rename the file as .mid (ie. tone.mp3 -> tone.mid). Not .midi as some of the verizon docs seem to suggest.

max daddy, thanks so much for all the help, it was very good, my only problem is using the program to cut the song down, and then using the second program, but i cant get the file down to 60kb like needed, any ideas?

i got the sound file under 60 kb but it keeps dropping the attachment, it names itself .mid.wav for some reason, im thinking that could be the problem

First, make sure you've got file extensions visible in Explorer, otherwise you'll never be able to change the file extension to .mid
(Do this is Explorer Tools>Folder Options>View tab).
Also, if dBPowerAmp is creating a .wav file, you need to make sure you set "Converting File to" > "Mp3 (lame)" and not "Wave" which is the default.
