Blue Insert in Earpiece

I browsed thru this forum before getting the 6100 recently and saw a suggestion by someone with the username Frosty??? who suggested removing the blue plastic insert that covers most of the earpiece opening. Was that a serious suggestion or was he kidding? What is the function of the blue plastic? Does it act like the vibrating part of a stereo speaker or is it just a protective cover to be removed during installation?

Remove the blue plastic, it is there to protect it during the shipping and production of the phone. It can make it hard to hear if the salesman failed to remove it for you...

Thanks for the help. I went to a Verizon Store to verify this. I thought you meant the whole eliptical shaped piece. It is actually just a thin plastic coating protecting the earpiece and a similar crescent shaped plastic coating protecting the microphone that shoulos have been removed when I bought the phone.
