There is a definite firmware difference. The blue has voice recorder and instant messaging through ICQ, AOL, and Yahoo while the grey doesn't. The grey one allows you to combine a persons various phone numbers into one entry. To view someones mobile, home, or office number you just press the right arrow. The grey also has an icon for the edge network so you know when the service is available. Here is a list of some of the other features on the grey and isn't on the blue:
Fax
Sync with computer
Two lines on one SIM card
Push to Talk (although not available)
That's about it. I have the grey version and my wife and daughter have the blue.

So is there any way to use the IM feature on the grey version (I have T-Mobile)? I have two blue ones now for me and my wife but I want to get the grey one for myself and sell the blue one. I heard the web browsing and messaging features are on European based software and may not work with T-Mobile's service. Although some of the grey ones are sold as unbranded, they still were made for some carrier at one time or another (according to a Motorola tech). Anyway, has anyone had any difficulties with the grey one (if it's being used with T-Mobile)?

Yes, I did. The grey one's will not show a voicemail notification on T-Mobile's "new" voicemail system. It will work on T-Zones, MMS and picture messaging. I have not actually tried to browse the web, but I was able to connect with T-zones.
