I have been following the posts and tho I planned to get a Razr, have not. Too many complaints.
Today, I noticed my super had a Razr. He said he switched from Verizon to Cingular (we are in NYC) and has much better connections/reception. His assertion surprised me. How do the providers compare in NYC re dead spots and dropped calls. Also, I do to Maine (Rockland area) and Mass often, so same question for these other locales. I would be cancelling a contract, hence speding money for the change.

GSM (Cingular) in the US currently cannot compete with Verizon's network. Verizon has a Huge CDMA netork with more towers than anyone. Cingular is losing more customers than verizon every day. If you search the web you will clearly see that Verizon gains more customers per day than any other cell phone company. Its only a matter of time before Verizon has more customers than Cingular. Currently Cingular only has 2 million more and thats only because they bought out Att. You will also see that Cingular got the most FCC complaints both in 2004 and 2005. I been to NYC many times. Never have I seen less than 4 bars on my verizon phone. Im sure Cingular has great reception in NYC as does any cell phone company in a large market such as NYC, Bosto...

i know in CT cingular/AT&T service is not good. A friend of mine constantly complains about having no service. I've been with Bell Atlantic/Verizon since 1994 so I don't know otherwise. I just hear the "rumors".

Cingular service is improving greatly. In my market, my cingular phone has recently been out-performing my Verizon phone for signal and call quality. They are making great strides in their network. Don't discount them as a great network just yet.

I don't think he is too far off. If I am not mistaken the CEO of Cingular has said himself that they are not able to compete with Verizon. Verizon is much more advanced then Cingular, and I would have to say that the ceo knows more then you. Also, Cingular is losing a lot of customers because when they bought at&t their customer service was bad and at&t customers were lost and upset for being left in the dark regarding several issues. And, last but not least, Verizon was the largest carrier until Cingular bought at&t. at&t + Cingular= leading provider as far as customers go, but Cingular alone did not hold that record!

I have Verizon in NYC, LI and have responsibility to travel the entire Northeast. I have never dropped a call on the network. I did have problems on the Cingular network and had a lot of dropped call "refund credits" on my bill.
I think your super might be referring to the fact that GSM uses a higher quality encoding scheme for your voice and calls (when connected) do actually sound better and richer than on Verizon's network.
Personally, I'd rather have a connection than a prefect sounding one.
Stick with Verizon.

Thank you all for your advice. I don't know what to do. I have been having repairs in my closet. My handyman got a dropped call (Verizon) and went out of my apartment to call back. I know my Verizon phone (LG 4500) only receives at certain windows in my apartment; I would never expect it to work in my closet. Later the same day my super (Cingular) had two calls (completed) while in my closet. Now, I can't say reception in my closet is anywhere on my priority list, but what is going on. Note, I live in a prewar NYC building.

I am holding myself back from making a comment about the phones coming out of the closest but I wont (I guess I just did - sorry). I travel to ski country quite a bit. Had very few problems in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont. Also none in Colorado, or Utah. I use Verizon. My friends with Cingular while not always having the same wide reception as my phone, I don't really think it was that great of a distance. I have had Verizon for many years and have not thought of changing, even though I only really liked 3 phones from Verizon - the Moto StarTac, the AudioVox 9900, and now the Razr (which reminds me of my StarTac). I guess that what I am saying is I don't feel that Cingular is so much better than Verizon that you should change. Ma...

I've had Verizon for the past 5 years, and no complaints on call quality or reception (upstate NY). Verizon may have the most reliable network, but it's not a perfect network by far. You'll find areas where other services might work great, and your VZW phone will search like hell for a signal. The area you live in seems to be one of those. As other users have noted, Cingular is making huge improvments everyday. It all depends on where you use your phone the most and what the highest priority is for you- if it's at home, you should really consider Cingular (if it works as good as you say). Also, VZW might have a tower enhancement/addition on the way for your area, it might be worth it to check?
