GPS possibilities???
If this could just show its location on a map as I'm driving down the road, I would struggle to think of anymore options I would need...Is there a way to do this with the phone's internal GPS?
Then bump up the camera pixels and I could totally justify the purchase as I wouldn't have to buy any other toys.

This Pocket PC phone does not have GPS internally. But since it has bluetooth, all you need to do is purchase a bluetooth GPS receiver, get some GPS software for this phone and you'd be all set.

That is actually incorrect...this phone does have built in GPS and once Garmin Mobile adds this handset to be compatible with it's software it will totally work like an in car navigation system (with voice directions).

Thanks Schlup. I googled "garmin mobil gps" and found their website. They only show 3 sprint phones currently capable of being used like an "in car" GPS unit, but hopefully this one would be added to their list.
I would prefer to buy a package rather than pay Garmin $10/month for life to have the GPS capability. Would you have any recommendations on a permanent "one-time purchase" option?

As of right now there are no other options in the near future. I believe that Motricity has something in the works that will be available in the future...no time frame yet.

I use this on my laptop and it works pretty good. I'm not entirely sure about the PPC setails and usage.

I use Teleypes GPS software and bluetooth reciever that I bought for 199. Works exactly like a navigation system. Several other places like TOm-TOm also have this software for this particular phone. Don't know why people are saying this isn't possible? I use it every day. Teletype also have additional software for aviation, marine, and outdoor use

I think we're making two different comments. You can use a software and connect to an external GPS receiver/antenna, but you can not load a program that will use the internal phone locator and map your location on the screen, you must also have the GPS receiver to make it work.....so its not an all-in-one piece

I was also assuming the E911 feature was GPS... is that wrong? I've installed Mapopolis on my 6700 and it wants to know which COM port the GPS is on. Of course SPrint has no idea (their special support desk has only 1 unit for testing).
I"ll be receiving several of the gps-enabled direction systems over the next few weeks and will report here what I find, but it does seem to me that this thing has to have GPS if it is providing E911 servce.

They have no idea what you're talking about because it basically doesn't exsist. External applications that aren't specifically written for that handset cannot access the internal e911 GPS. The internal GPS doesn't have a COM port per-se.
You have 2 options. You wait until Sprint ports over the Garmin app, if they ever do. Or, you buy a bluetooth GPS module to throw on your dash.

Does any know if the 6700 will be able to do TeleNav like all the other Sprint Media phones and Nextel phones? All of Sprints current media phone perform the fuction that the maker of this post is talking about except for the 6700.

I keep reading that the HTC Apache platform does not have built in GPS, buit I have experienced where I am travelling, and my phone seems to be able to inform an application where I am. For example, I was pulled into a Starbucks 700 miles from home and when I input an address to MSN to find an address local to where I was, MSN drew a map from the specific address of Starbucks where I was sitting at the time to the address I had input, which was about three miles away. I infer that MSN was somehow able to tell where I was. If not GPS, then what was it using?

Man! i fiddled with the GPS crap for ever before i got it to work.
First. Global positioning does not = e911, e911 uses triangulation to sort of say you are around "this" area. but does'nt do what GPS does: pinpoint your almost exact lattitude and longitude.
my first little frustration was with my phone and the PHAROS bluetooth gps. i was using tomtom. although my friends little ipaq worked flawless, mine did not. the GPS control pannel is more explained on http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2 006/06/07/620387.aspx this site also says how to get it set up.
GOD i hate tomtom after all that, I never got it to work. so i got iGuidance. I had it working 4 minutes after i installed it. I could actually tell the program w...

Anyone tried Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006, it boasts a pocket pc version as included, and I've seen bundled packages that include a "tethered / usb" GPS module for around a $100....
I also heard of a rumored freeware app that uses google maps, and any gps module but can't find any good information on the subject.
I'd obviously prefer a BT GPS module, but I haven't seen a package software & gps module that I know works, if anyone has one they've got up and running happily please let us know where we can get it, and approximate cost?!

It does have the E911 feature but, that probably isn't what you are refering to. You can get the Microsoft Streets and Tips for mobile phones and add the software onto your xv6700. It is only like $24.95. You can go to microsoft.com to check it out. The new version of this has new addons and stuff
